      Ashton to Massey Lease
      This indenture made the 27th day of November 1762 between John Ashton of the county of Westmoreland of the one part and Robert Massey of the county of King George of the other part.
      Witnesseth that John Ashton in consideration of 5 shillings has sold unto Robert Massey all that tract of land lying in the parish of Washington and county of Westmoreland containing 100 acres from the day of the date hereof for and during the term of one whole year from thence next ensuing yielding and paying yearly the rent of one ear of Indian corn to the intent and purpose that by virtue of these presents and of the statute for transferring uses into possession the said Robert Massey may be in the actual possession of the tract. In witness whereof the said John Ashton hath to this indenture set his hand and seal the day month and year first above written.

      Ashton's wife to Massey Lease & Release
      This indenture made the 28th day of November 1762 between John Ashton and Mary his wife of the parish of Washington and county of Westmoreland of the one part and Robert Massey of the parish of Hanover and county of King George of the other part.
      Witnesseth that John Ashton and Mary Ashton his wife in consideration of 100 pounds current money of Virginia has sold unto Robert Massey all that tract of land lying in the parish of Washington and county of Westmoreland containing 100 acres already in his possession by virtue of a bargain and sale and by the statute for transferring uses into possession. In witness whereof the said John Ashton and Mary Ashton his wife hath to this indenture interchangeably set their hands and seals the day month and year first above written.

      Know all men ... I John Ashton, the elder, of Parish Washington County, Westmoreland, am held and firmly bound unto Francis Thornton of the County King George in the penal sum of Two hundred pounds, current money ... ( ) 1768. Whereas Richard Watts, late of county Westmoreland, died, seized of a parcel of land in county King George which upon his death, intestate, descended to Mary the wife of John Ashton, now deceased & to Ann, the wife of William Robinson, Gent. of county King George, in copossession and whereas John Ashton and Mary, his wife in her lifetime and William Robinson and Anne his wife, has executed a deed of conveyance of the parcel of land to Francis Thornton, late of county King George which deed having been executed in the infancy of Mary, one moiety of the land descended to Chas Ashton, her eldest son and heir at Law in whom the title thereof now is and Whereas John Ashton hereby acknowledging to have received from Francis Thornton full payment for Mary's moiety is desirous of securing the title in the land to Francis Thornton, deceased, or to secure him that he may be indemnified in case he should be evicted of the said moiety of land by Chas Ashton ... indemnify him ... obligation to be void ...       Ashton & Wife to Rose Indenture
      This indenture made the 5th day of February 1798 between Charles Ashton and Peggy Ashton his wife of the Parish of Washington and County of Westmoreland of the one part and John Rose of the same parish and county of the other part whereas John Ashton late of the County of King George did intermarried with Mary Watts who was the daughter of Richard Watts and sister and coparcener and heiress with Ann Watts who intermarried with William Robinson, and that the said John Ashton and William Robinson during their marriages did make partition or division of a certain tract of land lying on the lower side of Mattox Creek binding on the banks of the said Creek adjacent to the lands of Beckwith Butler, on the West to the lands of Henry Washington, on the South and running with the line of the donation lands of Washington Parish, and on the East side to the said Creek. And whereas Mary Ashton’s and her husband John Ashton did by virtue of the said division become seized and possessed of the upper moiety or half of the said tract of land, to wit; that moiety lying. Next to the lands of the said Beckwith Butler; and being so seized and possessed the said John Ashton and Mary Ashton died without having made any just position of Leaving the said Charles Ashton, then eldest son to whom the said moiety of land descended as heir. Now this indenture witness that the said Charles Ashton and Peggy Ashton his will consideration of 300 pounds current money of Virginia in hand has sold to John Rose all that moiety large half of the above described tract of land. In witness whereof the said Charles Ashton and Peggy Ashton his wife have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written.

      The Commonwealth of Virginia to William P. Flood and William Ashton, gentlemen Justices of King George County. Whereas Charles Ashton and Peggy C. Ashton his wife have by their indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the fifth day of February 1798 sold and conveyed unto John Rose the fee simple estate of a tract of land with the appurtenances lying in the County of Westmoreland and parish of Washington and whereas the said Peggy Ashton cannot conveniently travel to the court to make acknowledgment. Therefore we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Peggy Ashton shall be willing to make. Witness James Bland, clerk of our said court the sixth day of February 1798.
      King George, Sct; agreeable to the within dedimus unto us directed we have privately examined Peggy C. Ashton touching her right of dower the within mentioned tract of land which she consents to and is willing the same should be recorded in the County Court of Westmorland. Given under our hands and seals this 5th day of February 1798.

      At a court held for Westmoreland County the 25th day of July 1798 this indenture of bargain and sale and the receipt thereon endorsed was proved by the oath of Alexander Hodge one of the witnesses thereto and the same having been before proved by the oaths of John Stith and Henry Washington two of the witnesses thereto together with the commission annexed to take the privy examination Peggy C. Ashton, wife to the within Charles Ashton and a certificate of the execution thereof and the same is ordered to be recorded.
