      Start with the Thomas Marshall of Stafford 1688 inventory. There is an Ambrose Daniels, Edward Mason and Symon Thomson named.

      There were Daniels in the "Chotank" area but the only Ambrose I saw was from the Eastern Shore Of Md or Halifax Co. VA. No apparent relationship

      The only Simon Thompson listed decended from his father Symon. Birth 1640 in Ipswich, Essex, Ma. May have been a preacher. No apparent relationship [see Jims email where Simon was a brother to Alexander Thompson who married the Martha Sherwood, Wife of Thomas Marshall d 1704.]

      That leaves Edward Mason who was a son of Mary French and George Mason Sr., that died 1684 Stafford VA. He would be looking after the tenants of the manor which I'm assuming Thomas Marshall was one.
      ===
      ok, zoom forward a few years and look at Hugh French's 1701 will. I think Hugh is a brother of Mary but could not find any confirmation.

      1699-1709 Richmond County, Virginia Wills and Inventories [Robert K. Headley, jr.];
      French, Hugh, Parish of St. Maries. 20 Jan., 1699 ; 3 Dec., 1701.
      Land in Maryland to be sold and produce paid to my son Hugh;
      daughter Mary;
      sons Daniel and Mason French;
      daughter Margaret French;
      wife Margaret executrix;
      witnesses John Battaile, William Marshall, Simon Miller, John Miller.

      That led me to who was this William Marshall listed in Hugh French's 1701 will.

      The French family was quite well to do and one of the earliest settlers.
      Hugh's wife Margaret married Symon Miller who died in 1684. The Miller boys would have been legatees but no other relationship. Capt. John Battaile of Essex Co. Va married Elizabeth Smith and their daughter married Andrew Harrison Jr. of Essex County (South of the Rapp River). Did not find any apparent blood relationship. Maybe a financial one or Elizabeth is from an earlier marriage.

      Note that the location was always near the King George Border on the Rapp River.

      The King George Marshall Line seemes the best fit as the William Marshall of Westmoreland was born 1686. The Charles County, Maryland William Marshall III would have been 10 years old and not a good candidate either.

      I think Paxton mentioned that Thomas Marshall b 1655 had a brother William that could not be located. Need to look that one up again.

      Thomas in March 1688 and later a William in 1701. I would think that if the Thomas of 1688 was truely related to the Charles County or Westmoreland Co Marshall's there would have been more records. The 1678 transportation record implies he was probably around 21 yrs old. Thomas that died 1704 Westmoreland had been in the county by 1685. The Thomas Marshall of Allens Fresh named in Bacon's rebellion would have been at least 21 in 1676. I just find it hard to believe the millwright that was transported is the same that maintained all the Charles County & St. Mary's County area mills.
      I think this is the Lancaster Co. or Charles County Marshall line with John and his two brothers or sons Thomas and William Marshall. They were millwrights and probably came over to fix the mills and returned back home.

      There was a will for Lancaster Co. Va and an Inventory for Stafford County, Virginia. The Lancaster will did not mention a son William. The Stafford Thomas died and his orphan William was indentured to work for a guy on Potomac Creek (where the Town was). Can't remember his name right now but he appears in several court records and was quite a rascal. The last record for William of Stafford is 1692.

      I think this is the Northhampton Co. Marshall line with John and his two brothers or sons Thomas and William Marshall. They were millwrights and probably came over to fix the mills and returned back home. Note that Roger Jr. Marshall son of Capt Roger Marshall of Northampton was in that same vacinity and time.

      ===
      ok, zoom forward a few years and look at Hugh French's 1701 will. I think Hugh is a brother of Mary but could not find any confirmation.

      1699-1709 Richmond County, Virginia Wills and Inventories [Robert K. Headley, jr.];
      French, Hugh, Parish of St. Maries. 20 Jan., 1699 ; 3 Dec., 1701.
      Land in Maryland to be sold and produce paid to my son Hugh;
      daughter Mary;
      sons Daniel and Mason French;
      daughter Margaret French;
      wife Margaret executrix;
      witnesses John Battaile, William Marshall, Simon Miller, John Miller.
