Montgomery County Land Records, 1777-1781; Liber A1, Page 601. Deed of Gift, recorded at the request of John Medley. Feb 15, 1781 from Elizabeth Gatton, widow, of M, to John Medley, her son, for divers causes but more especially for the natural love she has for sd John Medley, her son, and for the further consideration of 5 shillings, provided he lives to the age of 21 years, she gives him as follows: 1 Negro child, a girl named Eve, 1 feather bed & furniture, 2 young heifers, 4 sheep, 1 bay horse colt, and the colt that my mare tiger is with foal with; if he dies before age 21, the afd Negro and chattels are granted to my son, Samuel Gatton, and if sd Samuel Gatton dies before he arrives to age of his receiving his estate, the whole of the above Negro, goods and chattels to return to the sd Eliza Gatton in the same manner as if this indenture had never been made.
