      Charles County Maryland Will Book B-1, 1782-1785; Page 68. Thomas Smoot's Sr Will.
      I, Thomas Smoot of CC, being aged but of perfect mind and memory, I make this my Will.
      To my sons, Edward Smoot, Josias Smoot, and Benjamin Smoot all that part and parcel of the land that I now dwell on, called Thompsons hope, to be equally divided among them. Josias is to have choice when divided, and if Benjamin Smoot does not return himself, it is to be equally divided between Edward and Josias.
      To my son Samuel Smoot 20 acres of land out of a trct of land called Gates addition, and being in the possession of my son Arthur Smoot.
      To my son Arthur Smoot the rest of Gateses Addition, it being the place he now lives on, and he is to bave his tract laid off at which end he chooses.
      To my dau Mary Smoot 20 acres of land out of the tract I now dwell on, called Thompsons hope, to be laid off where I now have a corn field, lying on the Rush branch, and also 1 Negro woman called Judah, and 1 feather bed & furniture, the bed she now lies on, and 5£and 1 cow and calf. She is to have the 20 acres until her death or the day of marriage.
      To my dau Margaretta Dent 1 Negro woman Bes and 1 Negro boy named Gearrard and 5£and 1 cow and calf.
      To my sons Samuel Smoot, Edward Smoot, Josias Smoot, Arthur Smoot the rest of my personal estate.
      To my son Benjamin Smoot an equal part of my personal estate if he come in his proper person.

      The will of Thomas Smoot was dated August 28, 1781, and probated November 5, 1782, in Charles County. Edward, Josias, and Benjamin received equaled portions of the dwelling-plantation "Thompson's Hope". Samuel was bequeathed 20 acres of "Gates on Addition", while Arthur was devised the remainder of the tract whereon he was then residing. Mary Smoot, the spinster, was willed 20 acres of "Thompson's Hope", and his daughter, Margaretta Dent, received a number of negroes.

      14 Jul 1721; Indenture from William Wills, Gent., to John Hanson, Gent.; for 25,000# tobacco; a tract called Newport; bounded by land of George Goodrick; containing 150 acres; also land called Discovery bounded by 600 acres formerly' surveyed for George Goodrick; bounded by line of Zachia Manor; containing 150 acres; said tract were originally taken up by Thomas Hussey, father of Elizabeth, wife of John" Hanson; also Ingerstone on the east side of Zachia Swamp bounding Discovery belonging to Thomas Hussey and land of Thomas Smoot; laid out for 230 acres originally taken up by George Thompson which became the right of Thomas Hussey; also Moores Lodge on the north side of the Potomac on the north branch of Zachia Swamp adjoining land laid out for Daniel Johnson and Richard Morris; containing 150 acres; also Moores Gore of 50 acres; bounded by Moores Lodge; also 2 parcels of land sold by Nathan Barton to John Allen, Gent. adj.       Nov 13, 1728 from Thomas Smoot of CC, planter, to Charles Smoot of CC, planter, for 9000 lbs of tobacco and for divers other good causes, (in sd Charles Smoot's actual possession now being) several tracts of land (that is to say) a certain tract of land formerly granted to John Goldsmith by patent dated Aug 9, 1658, lying on the west side of Wicocomoco [wicomico] River, bounded by a poplar tree by a fresh run near the head of a branch called Smoots Branch, the head of a fresh called the forked Cr, containing, as by sd patent, about 150 acres. Also another tract of land in CC called Smoots Chance, bounded by the bound tree of the Cabbin Land, Richard Harrison's land by forked Cr, containing and laid out for about 160 acres. Signed - Thomas Smoot. Wit - Robt Hanson*, Henry Hawkins*. This deed was acknowledged by Thomas Smoot and Abigail, his wife.

      At the request of Benjamin Fendall, the following deed was recorded on May 29, 1749.
      May 23, 1749 from Thomas Smoot of CC, planter, to Benjamin Fendall of CC, gentleman, for 20 shillings, part of a tract of land called Smoots Hazard, lying in CC on Fresh Run, commonly called Allen's Fresh, above the bridge, bounded by the Main Run of the Fresh at the upper side of an old Mill Dam, containing and now laid out for about 1 acre. Signed - Tho: Smoot. Wit - Joseph (P his mark) Pain, John Fendall. The deed was acknowledged by Thomas Smoot and Abigail, his wife.

      Charles County Land Record Book A#2, 1752-1756; Page (139). Nov 13, 1753 from James Maddox of CC, planter, to Thomas Smoot (Smott) of CC, planter. Whereas Richard Standforth of CC, owning a certain tract of land called Thompsons Hope, containing about 193 acres in CC, did, on about Oct 3, 1734, by a deed of mortgage, convey sd tract of land to William Feast of the City of London, waxhandler; and whereas the proviso in the afd deed of mortgage not being complied with, sd Feast, by his deed dated Jan 27, 1740, conveyed sd tract of land and sd deed of mortgage, and all his right to sd land, to James Russell of Prince Georges County. Sd Russell, by deed, has since conveyed the land and the deed of mortgage and all the right of sd Russell to the land, to Daniel McDaniel. Sd McDaniel, by deed dated Oct 18, 1743, conveyed sd tract of land and the deed of mortgage and all his right, to afd James Maddox. Now this deed witnesses that sd James Maddox, for 6000 lbs of crop tobacco, sells to sd Smoot, the afd tract of land called Thompsons Hope, Signed - James Maddox. Wit - George Dent, Daniel Food yst
