      In old Rappahannock County embracing, until 1692, the present counties of Essex and Richmond, John Washington appears of record, viz.:

      "Mr John Washington Overseer of this my last will" etc., in the will signed by "the marke of Tho. TR Wright," dated 23 October, 1661, proved 10 May 1666; witnesses, Roger +Richardson, Robt. Sisson. [Will Book No. 1, p. 107.]

      "John Washington of Washington parish in Westmoreland County, Gent.," gave a power of attorney "to my loving friend George Jones of Sittingbourne parish in Rappa County," to acknowledge a parcell of land, 560 acres, "in the Freshes of Rappa County wch I lately petitioned for to the Right Honble Sr William Berkely, Knt. and Governor of Virginia and was by him granted unto me--unto Elizabeth Hoskins daughter of Anthony Hoskins late of Accomack deceased. . . . 27 December 1671. JOHN WASHINGTON Witness: JOHN WATTS, JAMES FUELLEN his mark." [Deed Book 5, p. 15.]

      Patent from Sir William Berkeley, Knt., with the advice and consent of the Council &c: 500 acres in the Freshes of Rappa about two miles from the River side, near Coghill Creeke and lands of Beth Gilson and Mr. Robert PAYNE . . . the said land being due to the said Washington, being formerly granted to Capt. Alexander Fleming by pattent September 4, 1667, and by said Fleming sold to Elizabeth Hoskins, and by her deserted & now is granted by order of the Genll Court, dated 2nd October 1671, and is further due by Transportation of Eleven persons into this Collony whose names are on the Record mentioned under this Pattant . . . yielding to our Sovereign Lord the King &c. as of his mannour of East Greenwch in fee and Common Soccage and not in Capite nor by knits' service . . . for every fifty acres yearly at the feast of St. Michael Archangle the fee rent of one shilling . . .       "Lt. Coll. John Washington" assigned to Cornelius Wood of Rappa County, "all my Right title and Interest in this Pattent . . . March 4, 1673. JOHN WASHINGTON. Witness: DANIEL GAINES, JOHN ROSIER." [Ibid., p. 264.] (Cornelius Wood was the husband of Elizabeth (Fleming) Wood, daughter of Alexander Fleming, then deceased, whose widow Joyce ((???)) Fleming was then the wife of Lawrence, the brother of John Washington.)

      To sons Richard and Symon my plantation and lands thereunto belonging being 200 acres and if my son Richard when he comes to age will sell unto his Bro. Symon his part then his brother shall give him 5000 pounds of Tob. and if not then the Land and Plantation to be equally divided and to cast lots both of them for their shares and I give to each of them two Cows with all their increase both male and female to take their Choice. To daughter Constance seven head of Cattle five female with all their increase both male and female and two steeres one mare and to my son Richard one mare and to my son Symon one mare and if any of them miscarry betwixt this and the last of May then what of them remains to be equally divided amongst my three Children. I understanding my wife to be in a weak condition that my loving neighbors John English Peter Ellis and Edward Friar would one a week give my children advice and that they may be kept upon the plantation with my servant and in case my wife die I appoint my loving friend CollĀ°. GILSON We, to a white Oake thence No. by We. to a marked Pocickery near the land of Mr. ROBERT PAYNE whence So. to the place begun at the said land being due to the said WASHINGTON as followeth (Vitt) being formerly granted to Capt. ALEXANDER FLEMING by Pattent dated the fourth day of September 1667, and by the said FLEMING sold to ELIZABETH HOSKINS and by her deserted & is now granted by Order of the Genl. Court dated the 2 of October 1671 and is further due by Transportation of Eleven persons into this Collony whose names are on the records mentioned underneath this Pattent To Have and to hold the said land wth his due share of all mines & mineals withall rights and priviledges withall profitts and hereditaments whatsoever to the said land belonging to him the said WASHINGTON his heirs and assigns forever in as large manner as is expressed in a Charter of Orders from the late Treasurer and Company dated the 15th of 9ber 1618 or by the Letters Pattents to be held of our Sovereigne Lord the King paying to our Sovereigne for every fifty acres of land hereby granted yearly at the Feast of St. Michael! Archangle the Fee Rent, of One shillings which payment to be made yearely from yeare to yeare according to his Majesties Instructions of the 12th of September 1662 provided that if the sd Lt. Coll. WASHINGTON doe not seate or plant on the said land within three years next ensuing then it shall be lawfull for any Adventurer or Planter to make choice & plant on the same. Alsoe I give & grant to sd CORNELIA WOOD one Iron gray mare called by ye name of Lamb & all her Increase to her & her heires forever. I alsoe give unto my sd Daughter, CORNELIA, one Ring: I also give & grant unto my sd Daughter, CORNELIA, ye first Mare Colt that any of my Mares being that are in my Custody in Rappae; County wth her increase to her & her heires for ever. Alsoe I doe grant to ye sd CORNELIA two yearling heifers wth all ye male increase until she comes to be twelve yeares old & afterwards to have both male & female to her & her heires forever. The two yearling heifers aforesd are marked a cropp & a slitt on ye right Eare, an over keele & a nick on ye Left.
