Whereas by the general neglect of the Overseers of the highways throughout the County they are for the most part dangerous and impassable by which means (if some speedy course be not taken) the inhabitants of the County, besides other passengers may and are likely to suffer thereby. It is therefore ordered that Each Overseer formerly appointed by orders of Vestries throughout this County forthwith warn all the inhabitants within their respective limits to meet at such convenient time and place as he shall think fit, and that each housekeeper give one or more day's work (if occasion shall require) for each Tithable in well clearing the roads and making or repairing the most usual bridges, And if any overseers aforesaid since their being appointed by orders of Vestries are deceased, or made incapable of that employ the nearest Justice of the Peace is hereby empowered to appoint one in his stead, And it is hereby further ordered that JOSEPH WHITE overseer of the highways in Newman's Neck besides the limits prescribed him by order of Vestry, forthwith with the assistance of the inhabitants of Newman's Neck aforesaid with others of the neighborhood build a firm and substantial bridge over the head of Chotank Creek and that THOMAS BARNES be overseer of the highways and with the inhabitants within his Limits assist the said JOSEPH in carrying on the said work and well clear a good cart road from the said bridge the most direct way to the Church, And it is hereby further ordered that the particular overseers of each Limit in this County return an account to the next County Court of what progress they have made in compliance herewith and also of such particular persons as have failed (being warned thereto) of their assistance, to the intent the Court may take such measures in fining or otherwise using the said Delinquents as shall seem reasonable, the Sheriff giving notice hereof to the particular overseers appointed for each Limit in this County.
