      1743-1747 Essex County, Virginia Will Book 7; [The Virginia Genealogist-John Frederick Dorman]; Page 389-91. Will of Patience Gatewood of Essex County, Southfarnham Parish, being weak of body, dated 17 June 1745.
      Unto my beloved daughter Sarah Gatewood the land and houses on which I now live and two Negro girls Lily and Rose, and after her decease to the heirs of her body and for want of heirs to be equally divided between her two sisters Eliza. Gatewood and Patience Gatewood.
      My loving brother George Reeves shall live in my dwelling place as long as he shall remain single.
      Unto my loving daughter Eliza. Gatewood one shilling sterling as a bar to her of any claims to any part of my estate.
      Unto my beloved daughter Patience Gatewood three Negroes, Freelove, Fanney and Jacob. Also one pair of gold bobs and one gold ring and one stone ring.
      Unto my beloved daughter Sarah Gatewood all the rest of my Negroes, Will, Selva, Janney, Ned, Ben and Viollotto. Also one silver can and seven silver spoons, one pair of gold bobs and three gold rings.
      To my beloved daughters Patience, Sarah Gatewood, all my personal estate to be equally divided.

      To my four youngest children Eliza. Gatewood, Pasant Gatewood, and Sarah Gatewood and the child that's unborn, all the rest of my beds and bedden. All my cattell and hoggs not before given, to be equally divided between my wife and her four children.
      To my beloved wife the land I now live upon that goes to the roade that lead to the ould mill bridge during her naturall life and then to return to the next air, after the crop is finished that is now growing upon it.
      Unto my beloved wife £5 current money and the rest of my money to be equally devided amonkst all my children.
      One ould silver tankard and a silver spoon and a pair silver buckets to my beloved wife Pasant Gatewood.
      All the rest of my estate equally devided amonxt my wife and seven children.
      David Scott as soon as my will is proved and my estate aprased to devid my estate.

      ITEM I give and bequeath the land on this West side of the Main Rode that goes by the Church in Southfarnham Parrish to my beloved Sister ELIZA. REEVES to her & her heirs forever

      THE CONDITION of this obligation is such that if the above bound PATIENCE GATEWOOD Admr. of all the goods chattles and credits of ANN GATEWOOD deced do make or cause to be made a true and perfect inventory of all the goods chattles and credits of the sd deced and so made do exhibit or cause to be exhibited in the County Court of Essex at such time as she shall be thereunto required by the sd Court and further do make a just and true account of her actings and doings therein when thereto required by the said Court and if it shall hereafter appear that any last Will and Testament was made by the sd deced & the Exr. or Exrs. named do exhibit the same in the sd Court making request to have it allowed & approved Accordingly if ye sd PATIENCE GATEWOOD being thereunto required do deliver up her Ltrs. of Admr. approbation of such Testament being first had and made in the sd Court then this obligation to be void and of non effect . . ..

      ARTICLES OF AGREEMENT made and agreed upon the 17th day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty Between FRANCIS ATTWOOD of the County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham Gent of one part and MRS PATIENCE GATEWOOD of the same County and Parish of the other part Whereas JOHN REEVES deced by his Last Will and Testament in writing bearing date about the 2d day of October in the year 1736 reference thereunto being had will appear did devise and give to two of his Sisters (to wit) PATIENCE GATEWOOD and ANN REEVES to be equally divided between them a certain tract of land in the County and Parish aforesaid near to the UPPER CHURCH in the said Parish and on the East side of the MAIN ROAD leading to the same containing two hundred and fifty two acres of land and bounded Begining at a Corner Spanish Oak and Sassafras on the East side of a Spring Branch runing North West to the Road near the said Church thence down the said Road to a Corner Pine thence down the aforesaid Road to a white oak on the side of a hill so down to a Branch and down the said Branch to a Poplar and thence North East to where a white oak formerly stood thence North West to the first beginning Now Whereas the aforesaid FRANCIS having intermarried with the said ANN REEVES one of the said Devisees and the said FRANCIS and the aforesaid PATIENCE in an amicable manner have devided the aforesaid Two hundred and fifty two acres of land into two equal parts according to the Will of the said Testator and by a dividing line begining at the aforesaid Spanish Oak and Sassafras on the East side of a Spring Branch and runing a West course across the said Land to a Corner Pine by the aforesaid CHURCH ROAD which said line they the said FRANCIS ATTWOOD and the said PATIENCE GATEWOOD for themselves shall be the division between their respective parts of the land and the part on the South side of the said Dividing Line being one hundred and twenty six acres is agreed upon to be the part belonging to the said FRANCIS ATTWOOD including the houses and plantation where he now Dwells and that part of the said Two hundred and fifty two acres of land lying on the North side of the said Dividing Line being also one hundred and twenty six acres is likewise agreed upon to be the part belonging to the said PATIENCE GATEWOOD and the said FRANCIS ATTWOOD and PATIENCE GATEWOOD do oblige themselves their heirs each to the other in the penal Sum of one hundred pounds Sterling to stand and abide by the said Division in all things In Witness whereof the parties have set their hands and seales in presence of BENJA, WINSLOW FRS ATTWOOD

      THIS INDENTURE made the fourth and fifth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty one Between SAMUEL WAGENER of the County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham of one part and PATIENCE GATEWOOD of the County and Parish aforesaid of other part Witnesseth that ye said SAMUEL WAGENER for the sum of seventeen pounds Three shillings Currt money of Virga. hath granted unto the said PATIENCE GATEWOOD and to HER heirs and assignes a certain parcel of land containing forty nine acres being in the County and Parrish aforesaid being part of a tract of one hundred and twenty five acres of land formerly granted by PATENT to JOHN EVANS deceas'd as by said PATENT bearing date in the year of our Lord one thousand Six hundred and Eighty Seven may appear and purchased by SAMUEL WAGENER Deceas'd Father of the aforesaid SAMUEL of THOMAS EVANS Son of the aforesaid JOHN EVANS and bounded Beginning at a Corner Red oak near the ROAD leading by the UPPER CHURCH in Southfarnham Parrish being the Corner of the CHURCH LOTT, So along the line of ye Lott and the aforesaid ROAD to a Hickory standing by the ROAD Side and divides ye sd land from the land of HENRY REEVES, from thence along the sd Dividing line East to a Corner Red oak standing on a hillside and is a Corner tree between said SAMUEL WAGGENER, HENRY REEVES and SARAH WEBB thence South West to a Corner white oak standing by the side of the ROAD that leads from the CHURCH to PISCATATWAY FERRY Thence to the place where it first began, All which said premises are now in ye actual possession of her the sd PATIENCE GATEWOOD by Virtue of Indenture of Sale for term of one year and by virtue of the Statute for trans-ferring uses into possession To Have and To Hold the said land unto the said PATIENCE GATEWOOD her heirs and assigns forever.
