      Rose Matthews, Will, June 4, 1819; July 17, 1820
      I, Rose Matthews of CC, being sick and weak of body, but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding;
      To son-in-law William D{uhurst} Merrick, negroes; Frederick, Daniel and Rose in use and upon trust to aid in the education of my four youngest sons, Francis Matthews, Charles Henry Matthews, William Matthews and Thomas Matthews, and it is my will that he should sell said negroes and I hope that this money together with the income of other property will prove sufficient to give each of them college education.
      To servant maids, Charity, Lucy and Anny, each 20 dollars in consideration of their long and faithful services.
      To Susan Oliver 20 dollars in consideration of her faithful services

      Rose Dade's will & Codicil.
      I, Rose Dade, now of Stafford County, Virginia, but intending shortly to become an inhabitant of CC, was formerly the wife of Thomas Grigsley, decd, and was last married to Townshend Dade, also decd. I am now in health and sound memory and judgment.
      To Gerard Guibert of Prince William County, Virginia, and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten - a parcel of land in King George County, Virginia, and near the little Falls of Rappahannock River, being the moiety of half part of a parcel of land which I hold in common with the sd Gerard Guibert, and failing such issue of sd Gerrard Guibert, I give the land to my niece, Rebecca Bair of Prince William County, Virginia, widow, and the heirs of her body lawfully begotten, and failing such heirs, I devise the same land to the afd Gerard Guibert and his heirs, forever. I also give Gerard Guibert, during his natural life, an annuity of 10 £current money of Virginia, to be paid him by my executor, and issuing out of the estate to be hereafter to the sd executor bequeathed by me_
      To my nephew Thomas Vowler {mm note: this may be Fowler} of Stafford County, Virginia - during his natural life, my lot and houses in the Town of Falmouth in the County afd; after his death, the lot and houses are to go to Zachariah Vowler, son of Thomas Vowler. Also to Thomas Vowler, during his natural life, use of my 3 Negro slaves now in his possession, called Moses, Gerard, and Beck- After the death of sd Thomas, the Negroes afd and the increase of Beck, are to be the property of my executor_
      To William Fitzhugh of Chatham near Fredericksburgh in Virginia (for now) - during his natural life, the use of a Negro man slave called Gerard, now in the possession of the sd William Fitzhugh, as a jockey or groom. If Negro Gerard should survive sd william Fitzhugh, I want sd Negro to be immediately manumitted & set free.
      I manumit and at my death leave free my waiting Man called Mason and my house maid called Be_l. And as to all and every slaves that 1 shall die possessed of (except those disposed of in my will) I hereby give the same to my nephew, Gerard Blackstone Causin of CC.
      Executor: Gerard Blackstone Causin of CC. He is to have full Dower to convey to any children lawfully begotten or to be begotten by sd Gerard Blackstone Causin, the Negroes afd. And if he during his lifetime, does not convey any Negroes to his children, -I want the Negroes and their increase to remain to all the children of sd Gerard Blackstone Causin, to be equally divided between them. I give sd Gerrard the rest of my estate, and all my rights, debts, dues, and demands.

      Whereas I, Rose Dade of Maryland, have made and executed by last Will and Testament in writing, dated Sep 28, 1784, I hereby certify and confirm the will, and herein make my codicil to amend a certain part of that will. Whereas I gave Thomas Vowler, during his life, 4 slaves, to wit, Moses, Gerard, Beck, and her daughter Betty, I now revoke sd legacy, and I give sd 4 slaves to Gerard Blackstone Causin. Signed Oct 16, 1785 - Rose (R her mark) Dade. Wit - Joseph F.E. Dant, Josias Boswell. The codicil was proved by Gerard Blackstone Causin and by the oaths of Joseph F.E. Dant and Josias Boswell.

      Indenture made June 23, 1798; Luke Francis Matthews in consideration of 50 dollars paid by Michael Jenifer Stone sells all that part of a tract of land called "Widows Dream" containing 15-1/2 acres. Signed by Luke F. Matthews in the presence of James Freeman, Robert Brent

      At the request of Ignatius Matthews, the following Mortgage was recorded December 6, 1799
      Indendure made December 4, 1799; Luke Francis Matthews by his bond or obligation duly executed bearing date December 4, 1799 stands bound to Ignatius Matthews in the penal sum of 1,400 pounds current money with a condition thereunder written for the payment of 700 pounds current money with legal interest. Now this indenture Witnesseth that the said F. Matthews in consideration of the said debt of 700 pounds owing to the said Ignatius Matthews as aforesaid and for the better securing the payment thereof with interest to the said Ignatius Matthews also in the futher consideration of 5 shillings by Ignatius Matthews confirms (in his actual possession now being by virtue of a bargain and sale to him made for one whole year by indenture bearing date the day before the day of these presents and by force of statue made for transferring uses and possession) all that tract of land known by "Matthews Purchase" containing 345 acres. Provided Luke F. Matthews shall pay to Ignatius Matthews the full sum of 700 pounds current money with legal interest before March 1, 1804. Signed Luke F. Matthews in the presence of M.J.       At the request of Rose Matthews, the following Deed of Gift was recorded May 12, 1800
      Indenture made May 8, 1800; between Gerard Blackistone Causin of CC on the one part and Rose Matthews wife of Luke Francis Matthews of CC and daughter of the said Gerard Blackistone Causin of the other part. Whereas Mrs. Rose Dade formerly of Stafford County, Virginia deceased by the last will and testament duly executed did bequeath unto me Gerard Blackistone Causin sundry negro slaves in the words following to wit;
      "and as to all and every slave or slaves of what kind soever that I shall die possessed of except those above disposed in this my last will I hereby bequeath the same to my nephew Gerard Blackistone Causin of Charles County in the State of Maryland and executor of this my last will and testament and it is my will and desire and I hereby bequeath that the said Gerard Blackistone Causin may and shall have full power and authority at any time during his natural life by any legal conveyance or by his last will to give grant bequeath or in any lawful manner convey to any child or children lawfully begotten or to be begotten by the said Gerard Blackistone Causin the negroes aforesaid or any of them in such manner and in such proportions as he may think proper and in case the said Gerard Blackistone Causin shall not during his lifetime convey or by his last will devise and bequeath the said negroes or any of them to his said children then my will and desire is that at his death of the said Gerard Blackistone Causin the negroes aforesaid and all their increase remain to all the said children of the said Gerard Blackistone Causin or their legal representatives equally to be divided between them and their legal representatives and if it should so happen that the said Gerard Blackistone Causin shall by conveyance in his life time or by his last will convey devise and bequeath only part of the said negroes or their increase to any of the children aforesaid then it is my will and desire that the residue of the negroes aforesaid so remaining undisposed of and all their increase shall remain to and be equally divided among the children of the said Gerard Blackistone Causin and their legal representatives except such child or children who may by conveyance or by will have receive or entitled from the said Gerard Blackistone Causin to apart of the negroes aforesaid it being my will and intention that the said negroes should belong to the said Gerard Blackistone Causin and his issue and the said Gerard Blackistone Causin should have every power of ownership over the said slaves except that of conveying them from his children"
      As by the last will and testament of the said Rose Dade recorded and filed in the office of wills for Charles County reference being thereto had will fully appear. Now this indenture Witnesseth that the said Gerard Blackistone Causin in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath for his aforesaid daughter Rose Matthews and in order to effectuate the desire and intention of the before mentioned Rose Dade in pursuance of the power and authority vested in him by the before mentioned will and testament of Rose Dade, doth grant convey and make over to the said Rose Matthews a negro woman being one of the slaves bequeath to him and also the several children of the said negro woman Mina hereafter named; Zachariah, Jane, James, Gustavus, Isaac and Alfred.
