Mar. 15, 1774 - Prince Georges County, Md. Land Records. The following deposition was given at a land commission for "Charley" owned by Thomas Hanson Marshall. The deposition was taken by Lhe commissioners at the land, being on the south side of a road that leads out of Pomonkey Neck to Piscataway, between plantation of Mrs. Elizabeth Beall's and Susanna Dyar's and near to John Emmerson Jr.'s fence.
Nathaniel Halley, aged 44 years or thereabouts [so b. ca. 1730], declares that about 20 years ago or thereabouts Malcom McBean showed me a tree and said it was the last or corner tree of Mr. John Beall's land; the tree appeared to be about one foot or fifteen inches through; it was either a gray or red oak; sometime after, he this deponent saw some persons surveying and he went to them; it was Mr. Hodskins, George Parker and Edward Cole as they were running a line and stopping at the end of their number of perches, then Mr. Parker rode over for Mr. Beall; after sometime Mr. Parker and Mr. Beall came together to the place where they had stopped; then Mr. Beall took Mr. Thomas Marshall aside; after some time Mr. Parker was called to them; in a little time after they all came to the said tree, then went on surveying down into the Neck; sometime afterwards he was in company with Mr. George Parker riding to Portobacco; he this deponent asked Mr. Parker what passed between him, Mr. John Beall and Mr. Thomas Marshall about the tree; he told this deponent Mr. BeallPsi reason for not showing him the tree when he first came was he did not choose? to show him the tree till he asked Mr. Marshal/ whether it would not be of prejudice to him or not, and that Mr. Marshall said it would not then Mr. John Beall showed Mr. Parker the said tree and told him it was his last corner tree.
