THIS INDENTURE made the thirteenth day of May in year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and seventy eight and in the Second year of the Commonwealth of Virginia Between PETER PRESLY THORNTON of NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY Esquire of one part and JOHN CATESBY COCKE Esquire of other part Witnesseth that PETER PRESLY THORNTON for and in consideration of the sum of Three hundred and fifty pounds current money to him in hand paid by JOHN CATESBY COCKE by these presents doth bargain and sell JOHN CATESBY COCKE and his heirs all that tract or parcel of land containing Seven hundred acres, it. being part of a Tract lately divided between the said PETER PRESLY THORNTON and his Brother, PRESLY THORNTON, Sittuate in County of Culpeper and on a branch of RAPPAHANOCK called and known by the name of EASTHAMS RIVER, begining at a Spanish Oak, red Oak and Hickory near a branch and on CHESTERS GAP ROAD on the North West side thereof, thence down the ROAD according to the several courses thereof to two small red Oak saplings on the North West. side thereof and Corner to Mr. HICKMAN, thence South fifty nine degrees WestTwo hundred and eight poles to two white Oaks and one red Oak near a Branch, thence North twenty degrees Forth five minutes West One hundred and twelve poles to a red Oak, thence North thirty eight degrees West Forty poles to a Maple standing in a branch, thence North eighty one degrees West thirtyeight poles to a red Oak on the side of a Hill, thence North seventy four degrees West. forty one poles to two Swamp Spanish Oaks, thence South seventy three degrees West twenty two pole to a Spanish Oak and Hickory, thence North forty six degrees West thirty pole to two white Oaks on LIZARD BRANCH side, thence up the meanders thereof according to the several courses to two Spanish Swamp Oaks standing on said Branch, thence North seventy one degrees West fifty pole to three Spanish Oaks in a Pond, thence North twenty one degrees West One hundred and twenty pole to a red Oak on EASTHAMs RIVER aforesaid, thence down the said RIVER according to the several courses thereof to a white and red Oak Stump standing on said RIVER bank, Thence leaving the RIVER South twenty degrees East twenty pole to a post, thence North sixty five degrees East One hundred and four pole to a white Oak, red Oak and Hickory, thence North Ten degrees East One hundred and sixty eight pole to five white Oaks standing on a Ridge, thence South eighty four degrees East One hundred pole to the begining which said Dividend or parcel of land with all houses buildings yards gardens orchards water courses commodities and appurtenances to the same belonging To have and to hold the said Dividend Tract and parcel of land and premises with every of their appurtenances unto JOHN CATESBY COCKE his heirs and assigns and PETER PRESLY THORNTON and his heirs will warrant and forever defend the said Dividend Tract & Parcell of land unto JOHN CATESBY COCKE his heirs and assigns against the claim of every person whatsoever In Witness whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and Seals the day and year first above written

This Indenture was proved by the Oath of REUBIN BEALE a witness thereto and ordered to be Certified; At a Court held for said County the 17th day of April 1780, was further proved by the Oath of ROBERT HAMILTON, a witness thereto, which is to be Certified;
And at a Court held for the aforesaid County the 16th day of September 1782 was fully proved by the Oath of JOHN TAYLOR HAMILTON, another witness thereto, and ordered to be recorded
