      At a court held for Orange County on Thursday the 27th day of August 1741.
      - In the suit in Chancery brought by John Thornton of Orange Co. and Jemima his wife, complainant’s against Luke Thornton and Millicent his wife, administrators of William Longworth of Westmoreland County, deceased, the defendants put in their answer to the complainant’s bill and made oath to ye same. At the complainant’s motion time is granted him until the next court to consider the same.

      Ashton & Wife to Thornton Indenture
      This indenture made the 5th day of April 1787 between Burditt Ashton of King George County and Mary Ashton his wife of the one part and John Thornton of the County of Orange of the other part. Witnesseth that Burditt Ashton and Mary Ashton his wife in consideration of 3100 pounds current money of Virginia in hand have sold unto John Thornton all that tract of land lying at the mouth of Nominy River bounded as followeth; beginning at “L” corner to this land and the lands of Mr. Robert Carter’s running thence upon a dividing line between the lands and the lands of Mr. Richard Lee, Jr., North 51 ½° East to “X” an old tree standing on the river bank and thence along the several courses and meanders of Nominy River to “F” corner to Vaughan’s Branch to this land and the land of Mr. William Storke, thence South 240 poles to “G” thence West 52 poles to “H” thence North 264 poles to “I” thence West 22 poles to “K” thence North 83 poles to “L” the beginning containing 643 acres by reference to a survey made by order of Westmoreland Court bearing date the 30th July 1783. In witness whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto interchangeably set their hands and seals the year and day first above written.

      The Commonweath of Virginia to John Ashton, Thacker Washington and William Storke, Gent. Whereas Burditt Ashton and Mary Ashton his wife by their indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 5th day of April 1787 have sold and conveyed unto John Thornton of the County of Orange the fee simple estate of the above premises with the appurtenances lying in the Parish of Cople and County of Westmoreland and whereas the said Mary Ashton cannot conveniently travel to our court of Westmoreland to make acknowledgement. Therefor we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgement which the said Mary Ashton shall be willing to make. Witness James Bland, clerk of our said court this 6th day of April 1787.
      Pursuant to the within commission we the subscribers personally went to Mary Ashton and received her acknowledgement of the deed annexed and she did the same without the persuation or threat of her husband and was willing that the same should be certified by us to the justices of the County of Westmoreland. Given under our hands and seals this 6th day of April 1787.

      At a court held for Westmoreland County the 25th April 1787 this indenture of bargain and sale and receipt thereon endorsed were acknowledgment by Burditt Ashton party thereto and together with a commission annexed to take the privy examination of Mary Ashton an a certificate of the execution are ordered to be recorded.

      At a court held for Westmoreland County the 29th day of April 1794 this indenture being presented to the court by Daniel McCarty it is ordered that the same be recorded the records book being stolen wherein were formerly recorded.
