      Bushrod's Will
      In the name of God Amen, I John Bushrod of the Parish of Cople in the County of Westmoreland, Gent., Being sick and weak but of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following.
      Imprimis I give and bequeath to my loving wife Mildred Bushrod and her heirs all and every the Negro slaves and all the stock I now hold and am possessed of or have any claim to by virtue of my intermarriage with her in the sum of 400 pounds current money of Virginia, the chariot I have sent for in Great Britain (when it arrives), and the two horses I designed for it, one large silver cup with two handles, one dozen silver spoons, which I have sent for in Great Britain (when they arrive), the bed and furniture, writing desk, covered armchair, dressing table and glass which is the furniture of my lodging chamber, as also the use of my waiting man Isaac for and during her natural life, the legacies aforesaid I design to be in full satisfaction of the dower of my said wife or any claim she may had to any part of my estate either real or personal and in case my will said wife shall not on the standing this devise, claim her dower of my estate after the decease, then the above bequest to be void.
      Item I give and devise unto my granddaughter Mary Washington three Negroe slaves; Keren, Morly and Silly and their increase to be delivered to her when she arrives to the age of 18 years or marries which ever shall first happen. My daughter Hannah Washington to have the use and profits of the same till that time.
      Item I give and devise unto my granddaughter Jeanny Washington three Negroe slaves; Phillis, Darkey and Nell and their increase to be delivered to her when she arrives to the age of 18 years or his married whichever shall first happen. My daughter Hannah Washington to have the use and profits of the same until that time.
      Item I give and bequest all that tract of land whereon I now lives together with all the several tracts adjoining and also my water grist mill in the land thereto adjoining situate lying in being in the said Parish of Cople in County of Westmoreland and also the following 35 Negro slaves; Nero, Cate, Hannah, Sukey, Jemima, Billy, Pat, Abram, Kezia, Doz, Ralph, Abigal, Anthony, Dick, Violet, Clark, Joice, Harry, Alice, Jacob, Esaw, Peter, Boo, Tim, Willoughby, Baker, Isaac, Harvey, Phill, Daniel, Tom, Ben, Patience, Aaron and Daniel, and their increase. Also, my waiting man Isaac after the decease of my wife unto my daughter Hannah Washington and to her heirs and in default of such heirs male to the eldest daughter she shall have at the time of her death. In default of any heirs to my daughter Elizabeth Bushrod in the male heirs of her body.
      Item I give and bequeath my land known by the name of “Forrest Land” lying in the parish aforesaid adjoining to the lands of Turberville and Cox and [missing] in the Parish of Washington and the County aforesaid adjoining Lee and McCarty’s lands, and also 41 Negro slaves; George, Bridget, Betty, Mary, Jenny, Ned, Betty, Frank, Easter, Billy, Jeny, Frank, Winnie, Nan, Jimmy, Soloman, Adam, Charity, Nat, Abrabah, Jack, Sam, Dawson, Simon, Charlot, Sukey, Toney, Dinah, Betty, Peg, Moll, Isaac, Andrew, Nan, Mores, Bab, Beck, Will, Grace, and Judy, and their increase unto my daughter Elizabeth Bushrod and the heirs male of her body lawfully begotten and in default of such male heirs to the first daughter the said Elizabeth shall have. In default of any heirs to my daughter Hannah Washington in the male heirs of her body.
      Item I give and bequeath to Lydia Bushrod Pettit, daughter of Mr. John Pettit in case her father spends all his estate and is unable to maintain her, the sum of £10 to be paid yearly for her maintenance out of the profits of my estate until she arrives at the age of 18 years or his married whichever shall first happen, exclusive of her board, provided that the said Lydia is permitted to live with my daughter Hannah Washington.
      Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah Washington all my household furniture of what nature kind or quality so ever not before given as also all my stock of every kind and utensil belonging to the land and plantations I have herein before given her and one half of my horses.
      I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Bushrod all my stock of every kind and utensils belonging to the lands and plantations I have herein before given her as also all the residue of my personal estate.
      Item I direct that my daughter Elizabeth Bushrod do live with her sister.
      Item I confirm the gift of the eight following Negro slaves given to my daughter Hannah Washington; Cesar, Winah, Lucy, Jenny, Jeny, Joan and her two children; which was sundry goods and money that I have given to her since her marriage amounts to the full sum of what I promised with her intermarriage.
      Item as I have devised several negroes of the same names to each of my daughters, to prevent any disputes I have given them with their mother’s and the families together.
      Item I constitute and appoint my friends Hon. Richard Corbin, Esq. and Major John Augustine Washington, executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 14th day of February 1760.

At a court held for the said County the 30th day of December 1760 this will of John Bushrod, Gent., deceased was presented into court and sworn to by John Augustine Washington one of the executors therein named, the same being proved by the oath of all the witnesses thereto subscribed, is admitted to record and upon motion of said executors in his performing what the law is such cases require certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

      Will of John Bushrod of Westmoreland County, Gent., being weak of body, dated 26 Jan. 1719 [1720].
      To my two loving daughters Apphia Fantleroy and Elizabeth Merewether each 20 shillings.
      My loving daughter Hannah Bushrod one Negro girl Criss with her future increase and £100 sterling and 12,000 pounds of tobacco and ten ewes and one ram when she shall attain to the age of seventeen yeares old.
      To my loving daughter Sarah Bushrod one Negro girl Pegg and all her future increase and £100 sterling and 10,000 pounds of tobacco and tenn ewes and one ram when she shall attain to the age of seventeen yeares old.
      If either of my daughters Hannah or Sarah Bushrod decease this life before they come to the age of seventeen yeares old or without issue, then the estate to come to the surviving sister.
      To my loving son Richard Bushrod all that land and plantation I bought of Daniel Bryant and Frances his wife, also that land and plantation I bought of James Brechin, Clerk, adjoyning to the land of James Burne and Mr. Wm., Peirce's land. Also ten Negro slaves, Elizabeth, Lettice, Isaac, Hannah, Matt, Bridgett, Nick, Jemey, Paul, Nero, and 10,000 pounds of tobacco and three cowes and calves and three heifers about four yeares old each and five steares of five yeares old each and three breeding sower and nine barrows of three yeares old each, all the above mentioned estate to be paid to my son Richard Bushrod when he shall attain to the age of nineteen yeares old.
      My loving son John Bushrod all that land and plantation I bought of Mr. John Spencer in Washington Parish and not any of the land be cleared that is one the left hand of the road that leadeth from Nominy Ferry to the mouth of Pope's Creek.
      Also to my son John Bushrod thirteen Negro slaves, Tom, Guy, Sam,Cezar, Abraham, Virginia, Jack, George, Beck, Abraham, Moll, Dinah, Betty and young Rose. Also five young cowes, five calves and five heifers of four year old and five cattle of two yeares old and five steares of five yeares old and four steares of six year old and one bull, alsoe four young breeding sowes and sixteen piggs of four months old and ten spaid sowes or barrows of three yearesold and alsoe twenty ewes and one ram, all to be young, and one young breeding mare, when he shall come to his respective age hereafter mentioned. Also 5000 pounds of tobacco. Also my least silver tankard and least silver tumbler and one dozen of my largest silver spoones marked I H, when he shall attaine to the age of nineteen yeares old.
      To my loving son Thomas Bushrod all that land and plantation I bought of Wm. Robottom and Eliza. his wife and Robert Smith, weaver, and that I bought of Mr. Thomas Wady, being in all 900 acres.
      To my loving son Thomas Bushrod fourteen Negro slaves, Armetage, Danll., Toney, Patrick, Kate, Cuffey, Peter, Jacob, Phillis, Vilett, Abegall, Bess, Judey, and Jenny Jack. Also all my stock of cattle, hoggs, horses and mares that is on the plantations I have before bequeathed him. Also one large silver tankard and one large silver tumbler and one dozen of my oldest silver spoones, the mark I H. Also one writing desk which stands in my dwelling house hall. My son Thos. Bushrod enjoy all his estate imediately after my decease.
      What silver plate I have given to my sons Thomas and John Bushrod if decease this life before they come to age of twenty one years old shall come to my son Richard Bushrod and his heires.
      To my loving wife Hannah Bushrod the land where I now live with all the adjacent plantations dureing her natural life and after her decease to my son Thomas Bushrod and his heires, but if my son Thomas Bushrod should die before he come to the age of twenty one yeare or lawfull issue, to my son John Bushrod and his heirs and also that land I bought of Wm. Robottom and Eliza. his wife and that I bought of Mr. Thomas Wady to be equally divided between my two sons John and Richard Bushrod and their heires.
      If my son John Bushrod should die before he come to the age of twenty one years old or lawfull issue then that land and plantations which I gave to John to my son Thomas Bushrod, provided he give to my son Richard Bushrod one half part of that land I bought of William Robottom and Eliza. his wife, also that of Robert Smith, weaver, and Mr. Thos Wadey.
      If my son Richard Bushrod die before he come to the age of twenty one yeares old or without lawfull issue then land and plantations I bought of Danll. Bryant and Frances his wife to my son John Bushrod and his heirs and that land I bought of the reverent James Brechin to my son Thomas Bush-rod and his heires.
      If either of my three sons Thomas, John or Richard decease this life before they come to the age of nineteen year old what Negroes and personall estate I have bequeathed them be equally devided between my two sons soe surviveing, only if my youngest son Richard Bushrod shall be one of the surviving brothers to have the choice of one of the Negroes out of the deceased brother's estate and then the rest to be divided.
      My two Negro carpenters do work together for four yeares, which I have given to my two sons Thomas and John Bushrod, their names Armitage and Tom, and that they do the carpenters' and coopers' work on all my plantations (and what they shall work for abroad to be equally divided between my loving wife Hannah and Thomas Bushrod.
      My wife free liberty to gett what timber she shall have occasion of for carpenters' or coopers' work of any of my lands for the use of the plantations I have bequeathed her.
      To my loving wife Hannah all the rest of my estate, it being in right of dower.
      My wife Hannah Bushrod executrix. My estate be neither inventories or appraised.

      IN THE NAME OF GOD, Amen. I HANNAH COOPER of Parish of Cople in County of Westmoreland and Colony of Virginia, Widow, being in perfect sense & memory, thanks be to Almighty God for it. doe make and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following;
      Imprimis. My will and desire is that when BUSHROD THOMAS arives to the age of Twelve years that my Executor hereafter named put him to School two years and find the said BUSHROD THOMAS good Claothing diett& all other necessaries during the said two years, and when he the said BUSHROD THOMAS comes to the age of Twenty years my will is that my Executor pay him a good feather bed & bolster, a pair of sheets & a pair of Blanketts and all to be good, and a Mare near three years old and also a good new Rugg.
      Item. I give and bequath to WILLIAM SANFORD, Son of my Sister, ELIZABETH SANFORD late of the County of RICHMOND, deceased, 2500 pounds of tobacco to be paid him by my Esecutor as the Law shall direct tobacco payments after my decease, And I also give the said WILLIAM SANFORD, three cows and calves
      Item. I give to my Daughter, ELIZABETH MERIWEATHER, a Mourning Ring of the value of 15/
      Item. I give unto my Daughter, SARAH BERRYMAN, a Mourning Ring of 15/ and I do also give unto my said Daughter, SARAH BERRYMAN, her choice of any three suits of my wearing cloaths
      Item. I give my Son, JOHN BUSHROD, a Mourning Ring of 15/ value and my Negro man named Clarke and the bed that used to stand in my Porch Chamber with all the furniture belonging to the said Bed
      Item. I give unto my Daughter, HANNAH NEALE, a Mourning Ring that I have in my House and half my wearing apparrel. I also give and bequath to my said Daughter, HANNAH NEALE, a Servant woman named SARAH GREENWOOD and Eight Negroes (viz.) Tim Boy. Harey, Moll. Jenny, Sally, Babby, Frank and Simon with all their future increase to her my said Daughter and to her heirs and assigns forever; Provided and upon. condition that neither she my said Daughter, HANNAH, nor any other person or persons claiming or to claim by from or under her shall ever hereafter claim or demand from my Executor hereafter named to be paid out of my Estate any part of L. 100 which my late Husband, Colonel WILLOUGHBY ALLERTON, gave his Bond for to my said Daughter, HANNAH NEALE, by the name of HANNAH BUSHROD, and in case any such claim be hereafter made or suit brought to recover the said £100, then my will and desire is and in such case I give and bequath all the Negroes before given in this my Will to my said Daughter. RICHARD BUSHROD to burey me between his Father and Mr. COOPER. and to lay one large Tomb Stone on Mr. COOPERs Grave & mine or two which he shall think most convenient: But if it be one or two, let pedestals be under that or them, also I desire that Pedestals may be by my said Son, RICHARD BUSHROD, put to THOMAS BUSH- RODS Grave Stone, And I do hereby nominate make ordain and appoint my said Son.       THIS INDENTURE made the twenty eight day of March in the thirteenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George by the grace of God of Great Brittain France and Ireland, King. Defender of the faith &c.       THIS INDENTURE made the 21st day of January in the year of our Lord God 1744/5, Between JOHN SORRELL of Parish of Cople in County of Westmoreland of one part and JOHN BUSHROD of the Parish and County aforesaid of other part; Witnesseth that JOHN SORRELL in consideration of the sum of Fifty pounds current money to him in hand paid by JOHN BUSHROD, the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge, hath and by these presents doth bargain and sell unto JOHN BUSHROD a certain old Water Grist Mill near the head of NOMONY RIVER in Parish and County aforesaid on a Run lying on West side of said SORRELLs Plantation where JONATHAN RICHARDSON now lives and formerly the Mill of THOMAS SORRELL, Gent., deceased, with two acres of land on South side of the Run and one acre of land on West side at the ends of the Dam the Stream, Mill, Millstones and all the furniture and appurtenances unto the Mill, Mill Stream and land belonging: which said SORRELL hath by virtue of the Last Will and Testament of his Father, THOMAS SORRELL, deceased, or by any other ways, together with all profits and advantages; To have and to hold the land, Mill, Mill house, Stones and other the materials and utensils and premises unto JOHN BUSHROD his heirs; And JOHN SORRELL his heirs &c. the land, mill and other the premises unto JOHN BUSHROD his heirs shall warrant and forever defend so that neither said SORRELL his heirs or any other person shall challenge or lay claim thereto: In Witness whereof JOHN SORRELL hath hereunto set his hand and seal the day & year first above written; the abovesaid JOHN BUSHROD agrees with JOHN SORRELL that he his heirs shall be hopper free at the abovesaid Mill,

      Chambers to Bushrod Bond
      Know all men by these presents that I William Chambers of the Parish of Washington in County of Westmorland am held and firmly bound and indebted unto John Bushrod of the Parish of Cople in the County aforesaid in the full and just sum of 100 pounds current money in which payment will well and truly be made I by myself my heirs firmly by these presents, sealed with my seal and dated this sixth day of September 1755.
      The condition of the above obligation is such whereas I William Chambers hath bargained and sold unto John Bushrod his heirs of one certain parcel or tract of land containing 60 acres and being in the parish of Westmorland in County aforesaid whereon he now lives and by a certain deed of indenture of bargain and sale having even day with these presents relation thereunto may more fully appear.
      Now if the aforesaid William Chambers his heirs and assigns shall from time to time and of all times forever hereafter observed perform fulfill keep all and singular the articles covenants promises and agreements in the said indenture contain comprised mentioned on his part ought to be observed perform fulfill and In all respects duly truly and faithfully complied thereunto in the above obligation to be void and of non-effect otherwise to stand remain in be in full force power and effect.

      Grinnon to Bayne Indenture
      This indenture bargain and sale of land made the 30th day of November 1770 between William Grinnon and Nancy Grinnon his wife of St. Mary’s County in the province of Maryland and John Bayne of the parish of Washington and County of Westmoreland of the other part. Witnesseth that William Grinnon and Nancy Grinnon his wife in consideration of 15 pounds Virginia currency has sold to John Bayne a parcel of land containing 60 acres formally in the possession of William Chambers and son of William Chambers the refuted brother of Robert Chambers lying in the County of Westmoreland and parish of Washington and binding on one of the branches of Pope’s Creek, bounded as followeth; beginning at a marked chestnut and line of Philip Smith near and upon the swamp commonly known by the Beaver Dam, extending from thence along the said Smith’s line to a red oak corner tree to this land and the land John Bushrod purchased of William Chambers son of Thomas Chambers, from thence along a line of marked trees which divides this land in the land (for mentioned) sold by William Chambers to John Bushrod until it intersects with the said Beaver Dam, finally from thence up the several meanders of the said Beaver Dam Run to the place begun at. In witness whereof the day and date above mentioned.
