      Bowlin & Wife to Monroe Indenture
      This indenture made the 11th day of December 1800 between William Bowlin and Sarah Bowlin his wife of the Parish of Washington and County of Westmoreland of the one part and Benjamin Monroe of the same parish and county of the other part. Witnesseth that William Bowlin and Sarah Bowlin his wife in consideration of $57.50 current money of Virginia in hand has sold to Benjamin Monroe a parcel of land being part of the tract whereon the said William Bowlin now lives lying in the Parish of Washington and County of Westmoreland. Bounded as follows; beginning on the west side of an old road commonly called the Head of Mattox Road at a marked white oak, thence running South 70° West 63.4 pole to two marked white oaks near Charles Morris’ graveyard, thence North 76 ¾° West 122.4 pole to three or four marked red oaks at a road commonly called the Parsons Road, thence up the Said Rd., South 27° West 62 poles to Benjamin Monroe’s corner, thence with the said Benjamin Monroe’s line South 85 ½°East 80 pole to three marked white oaks, thence South 74 ½° East 40 pole to a another white oak, thence North 44 ½° East 52 pole to a branch nearly opposite the dwelling house where William Bowlin now lives, thence North 54 ½° East 48 pole to a marked white oak corner to Benjamin Monroe and David Monroe on a north side of a branch, thence with the said David Monroe’s line in the said branch North 63° East 49 pole to an old road leading over the head of Mattox Creek corner to the said David Monroe in the line of Dr. William Bankhead’s, deceased, thence up the Said Rd., North 24 ½° West 47 pole to the beginning, containing 57 ½ acres of land. In witness whereof the said William Bowlin and Sarah Bowlin his wife have hereunto subscribed their names and affixed their seals to this indenture the day and year above written.

      The Commonwealth of Virginia to James Park, James Harvey, William Augustus Hipkins and Newton Berryman, gentlemen. Whereas will William Bowlin and Sarah Bowlin his wife by their indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 11th day of December 1800 have sold and conveyed unto Benjamin Monroe a tract of land lying in the County of Westmoreland and containing 57 ½ acres and whereas the said Sarah Bowlin cannot conveniently travel to our County Court of Westmorland to make acknowledgment. Therefore, we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which she the said Sarah Bowlin shall be willing to make. Witness Joseph Fox, Jr., clerk of our said County Court the 19th day of November 1800.
      Westmoreland County, Sct; pursuant to the above commission to us directed we the subscribers will and personally to Sarah Bowlin and received her acknowledgment and she declared she did the same freely and voluntarily without the threats or persuasions of her husband and that she is willing the same may be certified to the County Court of Westmoreland to be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 11th day of December 1800.

      At a court held for Westmoreland County the 22nd day of December 1800 the aforegoing deed of bargain and sale from William Bowlin and Sarah Bowlin his wife to Benjamin Monroe together with the commission and receipt thereon endorsed for the privy examination of the said Sally Bowlin was presented into court and it having been fully proved by the oaths of William A. Hipkins, William Tupman, and William Parmer three of the witnesses thereto is ordered to be recorded.
