      THIS INDENTURE made the 4th February 1776 Between ALEXANDER SPOTSWOOD Esquire of one part and JOSHUA STAP Witnesseth that Alexander Spotswood for rents and Covenants herein after mentioned hath granted to farm letten unto said Joshua Stap One hundred and sixteen acres of land except Mine, Minerals and Quarries whatsoever in County of Culpeper on the North side of the River Rappadanne being part of Forty thousand acres left to said Alexander Spotswood by his Grandfather bounds and limites are described by a plot & survey thereof endorsed on the back of this Indenture To Hold the said lands to the said Joshua Stap and his assigns during the natural lives of EVE SALMON, ANTHERD SALMON and EDMOND GARNET and for and during the natural lives of longest liver of them paying yearly six hundred and eighty pounds of Tobo and Cask on 25th day of December and within four years plant three hundred good fruit Trees whereof one third at least be good apple trees and inclose with a good fence and keep in repair . . . .

      This Indenture proved by Oath of James Lewis which is ordered to be certified. And at a Court held for said County August 18th 1777 This Indenture was fully proved by the Oaths of William Strother & Anthony Hughes and ordered to be recorded.
