      Note:
Alexander the immigrant. Born in Belliclone, Perthshire, Scotland around 1610. Arrived Maryland circa 1650-51 when John Ashcomb ask for warrent for land due for transporting into the province: himself, Winifred his wife and John, Charles, Nathaniel and Samuel his sons and six servants viz. Alexandre Mathoda, William Gibbons,William Ward, Guy ____,Edward Wood and Joan ____ in the years 1650 and 1651 (Patents AB&H, f.202). John Ashcomb arrived in Maryland from Upper Norfolk County, Virginia where he had resided since at least 1639. On October 7,1646, John Ashcomb was assigned 600 acres for transporting 12 persons in to Virginia: John Ashcomb, Winnifred Ascomb, John Ashcomb Jr., William Lasher, Richard Calloway, Mary Calloway, James Goodcross, Madeline Powell, Henry Jones, Winnifred Jones, Edward Wood, Martha Lylls, Elizabeth Coram, John Moore, Thomas Salsberry, Gilbert Lake and Edward Prince. So Alexander arrived in America sometime between the date of the two lists: 1646 and 1650. Tradition has it that Alexander was transported to America because of his participation in the British civil war between King Charles and the English Parliament. If true, then possible he was at the battle of Preston ( August 17-19, 1648) and was taken prisoner there. Alexander married twice in Maryland: first to Sarah, surname unknown (possible a daughter of Samuel Taylor) and second to Elizabeth, surname unknown (often called Elizabeth Hawkins , perhaps because she had a great granddaughter named Elizabeth Hawkins Magruder which might have come into the family through the Bussey, Howard or Briscoe lines). Died at Anchovie (Inchaffrey) Hills, Calvert County, Maryland 1677. Had six children: James, Samuel, John, Alexander, Nathaniel and Elizabeth.

There are no church, civil or bible records surviving that give the dates of birth of Alexander Magruder's six children. The birth years given by the ACGS are somewhat arbitrary. Using probate and civil court records very narrow ranges can be assigned.

Alexander Magruder made his will (Wills, Liber 5A, Folio 261) on February 10, 1676/77. In it he establishes the his wife, Elizabeth is mother to his three youngest children. The three elder are always named in the order: James, Samuel and John. Of the younger set, Alexander is named always before Nathaniel. In bequeathing the elder set there part of his personal estate, he stipulates that they will receive it after their 20th birthdays

      All children born after 1657.

On March 12, 1676/77 Alexander wrote a codicil naming James and Samuel (that order) as his eldest sons. He says John should receive his real estate when he reaches his 18th birthday

      John born after 1659

James and Samuel will receive their portion of the real estate on November 15th of that year. Elizabeth will receive her land at the age of 14 and she is definitively grouped with the younger set of children. She's named last in her set but daughters were usually named last in the wills of the time regardless of their place in the birth order.

      Elizabeth born after 1663

In a deposition (Liber 17, folio 211 of the Testamentary Proceedings) Samuel Magruder states that on that day of September 2, 1698 he was aged 38 years. This isn't necessarily a hard date. People in this era tended to add a few years to their age ( to be thought older and wiser: theirs was not a youth culture). He was certainly no younger than 38 on that date.

Samuel born on or after 1660

Also in found in the records of the Testamentary Proceedings on April 17, 1677: the overseers of Alexander's will (Samuel Taylor and Ninian Beall) came to the court requesting the administration of the estate because the widow Elizabeth, one of the executors, was also lately dead and that the two other named executors, the eldest sons, James and Samuel were under 17 years of age. Elizabeth showed up at court three month later (July 25, 1677) and proved that she was very much alive and administration was granted to her.

Something strange is going on here. I know nothing about Samuel Taylor but Ninian Beall was a man of very high reputation and esteemed by his neighbors. Why were the overseers lying about Elizabeth? Or so mistaken? And why did Alexander make his codicil, when he was so ill very (he signed with a mark instead of his custumary signature), clearly dividing the fortunes of his two set of children? Was Elizabeth not trusted to fairly administer the estate of her stepsons? Alexander seem to be balancing things very evenly: two separate sets of estate and executors from each set: Elizabeth and the two older boys. Were any of the overseers (Nathaniel Truman was the third, lately deceased) related to the elder set and so protecting their interests or just good friends of Alexander, looking out for the fair treatment of the whole family? And is it usual for Elizabeth to have taken three months to come to court to declare herself?

All children probable born after 1660

Since Elizabeth children were born sometime after the last appearance of Alexander's previous wife Sarah, her dates in the official records is important. The first appearance that I know of is a deed conveying property from them to Edward Hinchman dated August 19, 1663 in Calvert County. Next is a deed dated March 11, 1670/71 where Alexander and Sarah sell property to Mordecai Hunton. The last appearance was Sarah, wife of Alexander Magruder, was on March 31, 1671, proving her right to 250 acres of land for transporting 5 people into Maryland: Jarvis Shaw, Francis Green, Thomas Jones, John Johnson and Elizabeth Green (Sarah signed her documents, so she was literate). This doesn't leave Elizabeth a lot of time to have three children: birthing patterns of the day meant a child ever 2 years. Elizabeth likely was married to Alexander for at least six years. Sarah must have died sometime in 1671. Alexander had have married Elizabeth soon after (circa 1672)

First set of children born after 1660 and before 1671. Second set born between 1672 and 1676

Assuming the overseers were correct about James and Samuel, Samuel was probable born only a few years after 1660 (he wouldn't been too far off his stated age of 38). For the second set, Alexander was older than Nathaniel but Elizabeth's place in birth order unknown (Alex. Was 1st or 2nd, Nath. Was 2nd or 3rd Eliz. Was 1, 2 or 3rd)

Likely vital dates for Alexander's Children:

James born between 1659 and 1661, died circa 1685 (estate accounted by brother John)

Samuel born between 1661 and 1663, died ca 1711 (will proved)

John born between 1663 and 1671, died between 1686 and 1704

Alexander born between 1672 and 1675, died ca 1746 (will proved)

Nathaniel born between 1674 and 1676, died ca 1734 (will proved)

Elizabeth born between 1672 and 1676, Died young?

Elizabeth was the mother of the last three children. Sarah is a good fit time wise for the three elder. There seems to be a tradition for a third wife: a Margaret Braithwaite. I'm doubtful of her existence. I find myself in agreement with Charles Kurz who authored the article in the 1979 ACGS Yearbook (Page 52-71). He notes that Margaret's reported father, William was "a cousin to Lord Baltimore. Alexander Magruder did not benefit from the known favoritism of the Calverts to relatives and friends by large grants of baronial lands and positions of profit and status. There are no land transactions or other documents of a Margaret Braithwaite being the wife of Alexander Magruder".
