      Butler's Will
      In the name of God Amen, I Thomas Butler of the parish of Washington in County of Westmoreland being sick and weak but of perfect sense and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament.
      Item I give and bequeath to my loving son James Butler the land given me by my father containing 66 acres more or less also the land I purchased of Col. Monroe containing 23 acres. Also a Negro boy named Ben.
      I give and bequeath to my loving son William Butler the land I purchased of William Moss to him and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and for want of such heirs to my loving son John Butler and the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever and first such heirs to the child my wife now goes with and if a son to him and his heirs forever.
      Item my desire is that my loving wife shall [missing] all my personal estate during life [missing] so my desire is that my sons (to with) James, William, John and the child my wife goes with if a boy shall each and every of them have sixt years schooling in each of the girls two years schooling.
      I give and bequeath all my Negroes and personal state after my wife’s decease to be equally divided between all my children except Negro Ben over and above the charge of all the rest to my son James Butler as above.
      Item I make and ordain and appoint my beloved wife Isabel Butler and my friend George Monroe, Junior executrix and executor or to this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th day of May 1756

      Westmoreland Sct. At a Court held for the said County on the 26 April 1757 this will was presented into Court by Isabel Butler one of the executors therein named who made oath thereto and being proved by the oath of William Monroe, Spence Munroe and Thomas Taylor three of the witnesses thereto it is ordered to be her recorded. And on the motion of the said Isabel and her performing what the law in such cases require certificate is granted for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.
