      TO ALL TO WHOME these pr:sents shall come I SAMLL. GOOCH of ye Countye of Lancastr: send Greetings in our Lord God everlastinge. Whereas MARY, ye Daughter of THO. ATTAWELL deced beinge possest of a certaine Stock of Cattle beinge foure cows one yearlinge heifer & one cow calfe newly fallen of a cow called Mall left her by her deced Father aforesd. And for as much as EDW. GRIMES & MARG. his Wife, ye late Relict of ye sd ATTAWELL, & feoffees in Trust for ye sd MARG., have in cnnsideracon of Mariage to be solemnized between me ye sd S: GOOCH & ye sd MARYE, obliged me yt: ye sd Stock of Cattle should wth: their whole increase be & at all times remaine in ye right & possession of her ye sd MARYE, Therefore Know ye yt: I ye sd SA: GOOCH due accordingly disimpart relinquish & make over unto her all I myselfe might laye or p:sume or pr:tend to ye sd Cattle wth: their increase by vertue of Mariage wth: ye sd MARY but if ye Cattle wth: their increase whatsoever (in case yt: I ye sd SA: GOOCH shall expire before her) wth. possession to her ye sd MARY & to her heirs & to be at all times at her disposall wthout ye let hindrance or molestacon of any person or persons whatsoever yt: may eyther by allegiance affinitye or consanguinitye pr:tend a title or claime to any of ye aforesd Catle or their increase as alsoe of any person or persons whatsoever yt: eyther dureinge ye time of my natural! life or after my decease may come into my estate or pr:tend or laye any claime of title as aforesd. but yt: they be & remaine at the Joynture & under my power to alienate &c. or dispose of any parte or p:cell of them or their increase at noe time whatsoever but yt: they & their increase be & remaine to her & ye Children borne of her bodye forever, Provided yt: in case ye sd MARY should decease Chyldless they, ye sd Cattle, to be & remaine to me & my heirs or assignes wthout ye hindrance or molestacon of any persons whatsoever & this Deed & every pte: thereof expressed to be in full force effect & vertue any clause in Law to ye Contrarye notwithstandinge.       EDWARD GRIMES of ye Countye of Lancastr: in Virginia havinge been longe afflicted & diseased under ye hand of ye Almighty, at present in p:fect sence & memorye blessed by his name doe make this my last
      Will & Testamt: in manner & forme as followeth
      I bequeath my soule unto God my Eternall maker & ever trustinge through ye meritts of his Sonne Jesus Christ my only Saviour & Redeemer to obtaine remission of my sins & everlastinge peace amonge ye number of his Elect in his most Glorious & everlastinge Eingomes & my bodye to be decently interred in ye earth from whence it came & for such Estate as it hath pleased God to blesse me wth: I doe give & bequeath ye same in manner following
      First I give & bequeath to MARGARET my well beloved Wife all my goods & chattels moveables & immoveables wth: all my flock of Cattle, Male & Female, to be & remaine to her duringe her natural] life, shee keepinge her selfe in Widowhood & single condicon And in case of her intermarriage then to receive only two Cows, her feather bed wth: ye furniture to it & her wearinge cloathes, And ye rest of what shee should have possest in Chattells & Cattle in case she had remained in a single condicon to be devided equally amongst WM, WRATON. AN WHITE & MARY GOOCH. to be & remaine to them & their heirs severally, but in case yt: ye sd Wife remaine in her single condicon and on maried then shee may depose of ye sd Estate to whome or how shee shall please to be ID joyed by her or them after her decease to whome shee shall soe give or bequeath the same
      21y. I give & bequeath to my Daughter in Law, ERA; ATTAWELL, my land in Rapahanock River yt: is foure hundred & thirtye seven beinge in three several Pattents, the sd land to be & remaine to her & her heirs borne of her bodie for ever & in case yt: she deceast childless then ye sd land to divolve to WM. WRATON & his heirs & consequently his dyinge wthout issue then ye sd land to divolve to AN WHITE & her heirs borne of her body & shee dyinge Childless to be & remaine to MARY GOOCH & her heirs forever
      Lastly, I make ye aforesd MAR: GRIMES my Lovg. Wife sole & full Executrix of this my last Will &Testamt. & yt: each p:ticular circumstance may be justly & duly p:formed & accomplished I doe make & ordayne WM. NEWSAM & WM. WRATON, Supervizers of this my last Will & Testamt. & in Witness of ye p:misses I have hearunto subscribed my hand & seale this first daye of August in ye yeare of our Lord 1653

      15 Dec 1647 (York) VA. Joane TROTTER ordered by the court to pay Edward GRIMES one pair of shoes, eight poultry and one old green rug for building "certeyne howseing" for Trotter. Virginia Colonial Abastracts, Vol. III, Page 82.

      20 Mar 1646 (York) VA. At a meeting of the court, "It is ordered with the consent of Edward GRIMES that the stock of Cattle belonging to Mary ATTOWELL, Frances ATTOWELL, Anne WROTTEN, William WROTTEN with all their female increase shall be by him kept for the said orphants without any future charge for keep and education of said orphants and their cattle one cow calf in the said acco't was given by the said Edw. GRIMES by Wm. WROTTEN.
