Subject: James Freeman and Anna Webster

Unfortunately I descend from the undocumented James Freeman of that area.

I have a paper handed down from:
      Isabel Campbell
      d/o George W Campbell
s/o John Freeman Campbell and Cornelia Brown
s/o Meshach Campbell and Elizabeth Freeman
d/o James Freeman and Anna Webster

Isabel copied the info from a cousin and it would appear it is from a family
Bible but I don't know that for sure.
It says exactly: "Grandpa's Mother's Family James Freeman and Anna, his wife were married April 8, 1787
Elizabeth Freeman was born Jan. 16, 1788
      John Garrerd Freeman " " July 23, 1789
      Benjamin Swain Freeman " " Nov. 23, 1791
The above John G. Freeman died April 25, 1792
      John Garrot Freeman born " 23, 1794"

As I set out to prove this, I found in St John's Parish, PGC: James Freeman married Anne Webster 8 Apr 1787 Elizabeth Freeman born 16 Jan 1788 (I have not located births, baptisms, deaths for the other children.)

Of course since early census records don't show all family members names, I cannot be sure that this is my James Freeman, but it certainly fits: 1790 Charles County, Maryland, page 560

      James Freeman

      males < 16 = 1 (son, John b 1789)

      males > 16 = 1 (James)

females = 2 (wife Anna, dau Elizabeth)

I also found the 1795 Charles County, Maryland inventory #331 for James Freeman Jr.
Kin shown as Moab Freeman and Benjamin Swain Freeman. I am quite certain this is my James Freeman because of the "Benjamin Swain Freeman" name and his death would certainly explain no more children after 1794.

I have a film on order from the local FHC, trying to find where someone was possibly appointed financial guardians for the young children of James if
      this is mine.

I have not found a marriage for Elizabeth Freeman and Meshach Campbell. Anne was apparently living with her daughter and son-in-law.
      1820 DC; Georgetown; page 25; 4 Nov 1821

      Meshack Campbell

      Males <10 = 1 (John)
      Males 26-45 = 1 (Meshach)
      Females <10 = 1 (Eliza)
      Females 16-26 = 1 (Unknown)
      Females 26-45 = 1 (Elizabeth)
      Females >45 = 1 (Anne Freeman, mother-in-law?)

My guess is that Elizabeth was the only child that lived to adulthood. I have found the will of Anne Freeman (nee Webster) in Wash, DC. In the will, written 30 Dec 1822, (though she doesn't show relationships) leaves her personal named affects to: Eliza Anne Campbell, John Campbell and George Washington Campbell. (These were the children of Meshach Campbell and Elizabeth Freeman that were born by that time.) She named Philip Webster as executor. The William King's Mortality Books show that a coffin was purchased for Meshac Campbell's mother-in-law on 1 Jan 1823.

I do not where she was buried.

Any directions you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

      Regards,
      Brenda Antal
