The Court Order Book for Caroline County, VA, 1740-1746 has an entry for the Court held on 11 May 1744, for John Madison, Gent., who acknowledged his deeds of lease and release of land indented to Elias Daniel. On 8 March 1744/45, Agatha Madison, wife of John Madison, Gent., acknowledged her right to the land her husband sold to Samuel Haws and Elijah Daniel. The last Caroline County, VA, Court Order Book reference to John Madison, Gent., was on 13 September 1745, when John Madison, Gent., and others were ordered to appraise the estate of William Durrett. No other John Madisons appeared in the Caroline County, VA, Court Order Book after this reference.

The Augusta Court was formed on December 9, 1745, and John Madison was appointed as the first Clerk. Augusta County, VA. [Augusta County, VA, Court Order Book I, page 1] The first Augusta County, VA, reference of John Madison's wife, Agatha, was in a Deed to Robert McClenachan, Gent., dated December 12, 1745 of 731 acres at the corner of Adam Thompson and John Ramsey and John Harvey. [Augusta County, VA, Deed Book __, page ___) These references show that just as John Madison and Agatha were disappearing from the Caroline County, VA, records, they were appearing in the Augusta County, VA, records and this John Madison was the first Clerk of Augusta County, VA.
