WILL OF COLONEL JOHN CHISWELL (c.1710 - 1766)
      WITH SOME GENEALOGICAL NOTES
      by
      George H. S. King

Colonel Charles Chiswell died in upper Hanover County in 1737 and his widow, Esther, continued there. In 1743 Esther Chiswell witnessed the will of Mary Barret of Saint Martin's Parish, Hanover County, and same was admitted to probate in February 1746 [Louisa County Will Book #1, p.9]. This lady was the widow of Rev. Charles Barret of Williamsburg and they were the parents of Ann Barret (c. 1714-1779), wife of Colonel William Dabney.

I also seek an explanation why John Chisell, Gentleman, of Hanover County, deeded my relative Captain John Fox (1739-1803) 400 acres of land on Henson's Creek in Louisa County on 8 August 1752 when the said Fox was only thirteen years of age. The deed recites that this land had been patented 20 July 1733 by the grantor's father, Charles Chiswell, Gentleman, deceased, and "a church is built thereon being the uppermost church in St. Martin's Parish." [Louisa County Deed Book "A," Page 478; Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Volume 21, Page 237]

On 31 December 1728 for £70 current money, Andrew Harrison of Spotsylvania County conveyed to Richard FitzWilliam, Esq., in trust for himself, the Hon, William Gooch, His Majesties Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Captain Vincent Pearse, Dr. George Nicholas and Charles Chiswell, 600 acres of land in Spotsylvania County on the north east side of Pamunkey River one quarter of a mile below Pegeon Run and being the same land which was purchased by the grantor from Harry Beverley, Gentleman, 6 April 1725 [Spotsylvania County Deed Book "A" pp, 134, 354].

The aforementioned 600 acres tract became the cite of the Fredericks-ville Iron Works; it was located on Douglas Run in the neighborhood of Glenora, Saint George's Parish (now Livingston District), Spotsylvania County. Douglas Run arises in the area between present routes #208 and #655 and enters the North Anna River just below Piegeon Run which is a larger stream and enters the said river at New Bridge.

In 1730 and 1732 Charles Chiswell, Gentleman, of Hanover County, purchased several additional tracts of land in Spotsylvania County [Spotsylvania County Deed Book "B," Page 94, 305] and in October 1732 Colonel William Byrd visited the Chiswells at "Scotchtown" and left an extended account in The Westover Manuscripts containing A Progress to the Mines (Petersburg, Va., 1841) Page126-132.
ommenting on certain misfortunes "of the mines of Fredericksville," Colonel Byrd observed that the iron must be conveyed "twenty-four miles, over an uneven road to Rappahannock River, about a mile below Fredericksburg, to a plantation the company rented of Col. Page." A portion of his ancient road as it approaches the Rappahannock River and the ruins of "Mansfield" (seat of Colonel Mann Page), is yet called the Mine Road.
