  • Notes
    • JOHN STURMAN I., eldest son of Thomas and Ann, b. in England, not later than 1620, d. Westmoreland County, Virginia., 1655, came to the Province of Maryland with his parents and sisters in 1640, and settled on Kent Island, St. Mary's County. He worked for Capt. Robert Evelyn in the capacity of bookkeeper, and appears to have been a man of some education. He served as a Member of the House of Burgesses from St. Mary's County, in 1642, but there is no record of his further service in the House. John seemed to be as active in the disturbances in the Province as his father was.
On January 19th, 1646, he, with his father, signed the bond not to leave the Province without consent of the Governor.

On April 5 1646, (Md. Archives-Vol. 4, Page 379) Jn Sturman per Attornaty Hardwick complayneth agst. Tho: Copley Esqr for deteying one browne Cow 2 years & a halfe old & up-wards firth her increase & dammages for her stay, as afore cropt on the right eare Wth 2 slits in the crop & slitt on the left eare. (Cropley denied having the Cow. This goes on for several pages, the case ending with both sides paying the costs.)
On the same day, "Mr. Rob Clarke Gent, complayneth agst Jno Sturman for taking out of his possess' one black pyed heigher & her calfe" etc.
Jan. 10 1651 Wm. Hardwick of Nominy makes his friend, John Sturman, his Lawful Atty . . Thomas Yewell witness. (This shows Hardwick had left Maryland.)
At a Court held at St. Marie's Nov. 6 1651 (Md. Arch. Vol. 10-p. 108) Depositions taken by Mr. John Sturman by vertue of a Speciall Commission to him granted for that purpose, were submitted in Court.
Same Vol., Page 237 March 24 1652 John and Richard Sturman bind themselves for the appearance of Wm. Hardwich at the next General Assembly to be held for this Province to answer the suit of Thomas Cornwallis, Esq. etc. (Richards Sturman is now in Maryland, and as a freeman.)
Same Vol. Sept. 26 1653 John Sturman was one of the 24 Jurors to sit on a murder case.

Since making their peace with the Governor of the Province, the Sturmans and their friends, evidently, were allowed to go back and forth between Maryland and Virginia at will.
