Pierce & Others to Thomson Indenture
This indenture made the 23rd day of July 1784 between Joseph Pierce, Jr., of the Parish of Cople in County of Westmoreland, Gent., John Lawson of the said parish and county, Gent., and Ellenor Lawson his wife, and Churchill Gordon of the County of Culpeper, Gent., And Mary Gordon his wife of the one part and Thomas Thompson of the said Parish of Cople and County of Westmoreland aforesaid, Gent., of the other part. Witnesseth that Joseph Pierce, John Lawson and Ellenor Lawson his wife and Churchill Gordon and Mary Gordon his wife in consideration of 1000 pounds current money of Virginia in hand and also of the sum of five shillings each to the said John Lawson and Churchill Gordon in hand has sold unto Thomas Thomson all that tract of land containing by estimation 600 acres lying in the said parish of Cople and County of Westmoreland adjoining Nominy or Pierce’s Creek and the land of George Gordon which said land William Pierce late of the said parish and county father of the said Joseph Pierce, Ellenor Lawson and Mary Gordon, died seized and possessed of and all houses and appurtenances belonging; except the dower which Sarah Pierce, the widow of William Pierce in the premises and which hath been allotted to her by metes and bounds. In witness whereof the parties to these presents have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written.

he Commonwealth of Virginia to Richard Buckner and Samuel Templeman, Gent. Whereas John Lawson and Ellen his wife by their indenture of bargain and sale bearing date the 23rd day of July 1784 have sold and conveyed unto Thomas Thomson the fee simple estate of 600 acres of land with the appurtenances lying in the parish of Cople and County of Westmoreland and whereas the said Ellen Lawson cannot conveniently travel to our quarter Westmoreland to make acknowledgment. Therefore, we do give unto you or any two or more of you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Ellen Lawson shall be willing to make. Witness Richard Bernard, clerk of our said court the 26th day of October 1784.
We the subscribers agreeable to an order of the worshipful court of Westmoreland have examined Mrs. Ellen Lawson concerning her title to the within mentioned lands and she voluntarily assigns all her right title and interest to the said lands. Given under our hands and seals this 26th day of October 1784.

At a court held for Westmoreland County the 28th day of September 1784 this indenture of bargain and sale and receipt thereon endorsed were proved by the oaths of George Gordon, William Gordon and Thomas Sutton three of the witnesses thereto and together with a commission annexed to take the privy examination of Ellen Lawson the wife of the within named John Lawson and a certificate of the execution thereof are ordered to be recorded.

At a court held for Westmoreland County the 30th day of July 1793 on the motion of Thomas Thomson is ordered that the same be recorded, the record books being stolen wherein it was formerly recorded.
