Whereas William Marshall late of said county was in his life time and at time of his death seized of a parcel of land lying in parishHanover in county King George and being so possessed made his last will and testament in writing bearing date 24th July 1746 .. among other things did give to his Eldest son William Marshall party to these presents the Plantation and tract of land whereon he then lived during his son's natural life and after his decease to his four younger sons GEORGE, RUSH, HUDSON and MERRYMAN MARSHALL to be equally divided among them .. and Whereas the said Rush and Hudson Harshall after the death of the said William of the sd tract of land mentioned in the will are since dead intestate without issue the Benefit survived to the said George and Merryman Marshall parties to these presents.       THIS INDENTURE made the 24th day of May one thousand seven hundred & Eighty one Between MERRYMAN MARSHALL and PEGGY his Wife of County of ORANGE of one part and BENJAMIN JOHNSON of King George County of other part: Witnesseth that MERRYMAN MARSHALL and PEGGY his Wife for sum of two thousand five hundred pounds of tobacco to them in hand paid by these presents do bargain and sell unto BENJAMIN JOHNSON and his heirs our right title and Interest of a certain Plantation & tract of land situait in the Parish of Hanover in King George County, containing One hundred acres, which land WM: MARSHALL SENR. purchased of JOHN INGLAND and devised the same to his Son, BENJAMIN MARSHALL, during his natural life and after his decease to descend to his four Sons, GEORGE, RUSH, HUDSON and MERRYMAN or the Survivors of them to be equally divided amongst them as they shall think proper; and which was recorded in the County Court of King George; which land hereby conveyed or intended to be conveyed be the same more or less lyeth between the lands of THOMAS TURNER, SAMUEL KENDALL JUNR. and WILLIAM GREEN, containing by estimation one hundred acres, Together with all houses orchards profits & emoluments belonging; To have and to hold the Plantation and tract of land unto BENJAMIN JOHNSON his heirs and MERRYMAN MARSHALL and PEGGY his Wife doth hereby grant for themselves and their heirs that they and their heirs the Plantation and tract of land unto BENJAMIN JOHNSON his heirs against them and their heris shall warrant and forever defend; In Witness whereof the said MERRYMAN MARSHALL and PEGGY his Wife have hereunto put their hands and seals the day and year first mentioned

      Know all Men . . I MERRYMAN MARSHALL of County of Culpeper Planter for divers good causes me thereunto moving but more especially to keep indemnified my Trusty and well beloved friend RICHARD VERNON who has layed himself under money obligations on my behalf in the way of Bail and Securityship wherein he is deep Ingaged for me I do therefore make over unto Richard Vernon my Negroe boy named London, and also my Negroe girl named Jude or Judith, to be by him
      sold to the best advantage he can at any time when he shall be in Danger of Distress on the accounts mentioned above and I do debarr myself from selling, moving, fair hence or any other wise consealing or secreting the said boy and girl till he the said Vernon shall be dischraged from any obligations he is under my account and farther I do Impower Richard Vernon to enter into any House belonging to me or any person under me where these Negroes shall be kept or supposed to be kept or any ways secreted, and Lease and Secure them for the purposes above and that without the aid of any sworn officer or any formal course of Law as witness my hand this 16 August 1771.
