      At the request of Charles Clements of CC, planter, the following lease was recorded this Dec 18, 1724.
      Nov 11, 1724 from Thomas Mudd of CC, planter, to Charles Clements of CC, planter, the 13 year lease of part of a tract of land called Brierwood in CC, containing about :100 acres, bounded by a tract of land called Saint Matthews, the orchard of the sd Mudd, the line of John Clements Sr. Clements is to build a dwelling house of good,-,sufficient work, 20 foot long & 16 foot wide, and is to plant 80 apple trees. The yearly rent is 600 lbs of tobacco and cask on each Jan 20. Sd Charles agrees not to cut down any timber trees unless for clearing ground and other necessaries to be spent upon the sd premises & not elsewhere.       Lease. [Blank month and day], 1741 from Walter Pye of PG, to Philip Welch of Page Walter Pye, per letter of attorney, is acting as the attorney of Charles Pye Esq of PG, to lease land in Mattawoman Neck belonging to sd Chas Pye, for I or 2 lives. This indenture witnesses that sd Walter Pye, on behalf of sd Chas Pye, leases to sd Philip Welch, during the term of Philip Welch's natural life, and for the natural life of Mary Moolly, a tract of land called Clements Hills, "late" possessed by Charles Clements of Charles County, having been demised and granted to sd Chas Clements by sd Walter Pye, and the sd Chas Clements having sold to sd Philip Welch all his right to the sd tract, bounded by the low grounds of Mattawoman Swamp, containing 100 acres. The rent is 1000 lbs of tobacco each May 1, and 2 bushels of wheat each Sep 1, and I fat turkey each Christmas, and 6 fat chickens at midsummer. If the rent is more than 30 days behind, Charles Pye may repossess the premises. Philip Welch shall plant an orchard of 200 apple trees of good winter fruit, within 4 years next, and the same well maintain. The premises are to be left in tenantable condition. Philip Welch shall not cut down or sell any timber or wood on the premises, or cut timber in a wasteful manner, further than to clear the land for planting & sowing or any other use for the plantation. If wood is cut down in a wasteful manner, Charles Pye may cart it away and use it himself. Charles Pye may cut down any white oak timber to saw into plank or heading or pipe hhd or barrel staves, or any black walnut or cherry tree or any crooked ship timber on sd premises, and to convert and carry away the same, leaving enough timber for the use of the sd plantation. Five acres in one comer of the premises shall be left uncut of the timber thereon, which is to be left to grow and improve.
