Barton Smoot, son of Isaac and Elizabeth Smoot, was born November 1, 1740, in Charles County. He lived at one time in Dorchester County, for in 1799 as a resident of that place he deeded negroes to his children Elizabeth and Edward. Elizabeth, who married ---- Radcliffe and who was later a resident of Prince William County, Virginia, was, however, the only surviving heir in the settlement of the estate of Lieutenant William Smoot in 1827.

If, however, I pay sd Isaac the afd sum with legal interest by Nov 10, 1773, then this bill of sale shall cease. I, Barton Smoot of CC, planter, on Dec 2, 1770, mortgaged to Isaac Smoot of CC, 1 Mulatto man called Bob, who has about 9 years to serve, 3 cows and 1 calf, and 2 young cattle, which goods were redeemable on Nov 10, 1773, as per CC mortgage. Sd Isaac Smoot has paid 51 £17 shillings and 4 pence half penny, the consideration mentioned in sd mortgage, and I, sd Barton Smoot, for the consideration afd, have granted sd Isaac, the afd Mulatto and the afd animals. The real consideration of the within mortgage is for better securing the payment to George Buchanan & Andy'' Buchanan the sum of 60 £7 shillings & 6 pence penalty & 414 lbs of tobacco costs of suit, due by William Smoot to George and Andrew Buchanan by judgment obtained against him in CC Court, Aug Term 1773, to be released on paying the principal, interest, and cost, and for the further sum of 8 shillings due by him to them in open account subsequent to the date of the bond on which sd judgment is grounded. signed Apr 6, 1775 - John Anderson.
