WILLIAM COPPEDGE OR COPPAGE (ca. 1648-1700), who came to Virginia about 1662 and made a will dated 24 June 1698, proved 18 Dec. 1700, styling himself "William Coppage, of the County of Northumberland, Planter." It is believed that his first wife was named Anne, as his will left clothes that were her mother's to an only dau. of the name. All 5 children were under 21 in 1698. He m. (2) Jane fforest, relative of Alexander fforest. She sold Wolf Neck, formerly land of Charles Byram, who may have been grandfather or uncle to William's children. William's friendship with William and John Howson, one a Captain, grandsons of Col. Richard Lee, shows that William was acquainted if not allied with the highest stratum of society. To each of his sons he left a separate plantation. As early as 17 March 1679/80 he was assigned 300 acres of John Hughlett's land.

IN THE NAME OF GOD, Amen, I WILLIAM COPPAGE of the County of Northumberland, Planter, being sick & weak of body but of sound & perfect memory ( ) judgmt, blessed be God & being sensible of the uncertainty of this Transitory Life, have thought fitt to make and ordaine this my only and Last Will and Testamt. which is this as followeth; Imprs, I give and bequeath my Soule unto Almighty God my Savior trusting only through ( ) of Jesus Christ my blessed Savior & Redeemer and I bequeath my body to the Earth from whence it came to be buryed in decent Christian buryall and to be laid as neer my Wife as possible with conveniencey at the discretion of my Exers
Item. I give unto my Sone, WILLIAM COPPAGE, my Eldest Son, and my Son, CHARLES COPPAGE, my youngest Child, the Plantacon I now liveth on with all the houseing orchard and land belonging thereunto one hundred & fifty acres be it more or less; and my sd. Son, WILLIAM to hold & enjoy the whole till his Brother, CHARLES, shall come to age of one & twenty yeares then to be equally divided into two equall moyeties & the first chaise to be my Eldest Sons & both & either of them to hold their sd. Devident to them and their heires for ever & in case of mortality, that if either of them should die before he shall attaine the age of one and twenty yeares, the survivor to have and to hold the whole to him & his heires for ever;
Item. I give & bequeath unto my Son, JOHN COPPAGE, all that my Devident or tract of land that I bought of JOHN SWANSON of this Parish, deced,, being a hundred acres or thereabouts, the sd. Land for my said Son, JOHN, To have and to hold after or att the full age of one and twenty to him and his heires for ever;
Item I give and bequeath unto my Son, JAMES COPPAGE, all that tract of land & Plantacon of mine in BALES his NECK, & which I bought of JESSE BALES for my said Son, JAMES att the full age of one and twenty yeares, To have and enjoy to him and his heires for ever:
Item My Will and pleasure is that all the rest and residue of my Estate, I meane my whole p:sonall Estate, to be equally divided among all my Children. only my Daughter, ANNE COPPAGE. to have a thousand pounds of tobacco above her share and what close shall be found left of her Mothers att my decease
Item. My Will & meaning is that neither of my Sons shall sell their said share of Land bequeathed as before without the consent of his next Brother & he giveing as much as another to have it before another; And if my Son. WILLIAM, shall when he comes to full age like that share or devident of land which I have given to my Sone, JAMES, better. than I have bequeathed unto him, that he shall have that and his said Brother, JAMES, shall have his as is demised in ye Second Article,
Item. I give my loveing Wife, JANE COPPAGE, an equall part of my personall Estate with my Children notwithstanding what has beene demised alrealdy;
Item. My Will is that my Son, WILLM: COPPAGE, be my whole and sole Exor. to see the full intent & meaning of this my Will to all intents and purposes faithfully performed; In Witness whereof & to every part & article herein mentioned, I have hereunto sett my hand affixed my seale this twenty fourth day of June in the yeare of or: Lord one thousand six hundred ninety eight

Northumberld, County ss: In Obedience to an Order of this County Court dated ye 1Sth day of May Ano. 1710. wherein it was there ordered that I the Subscriber should survey the Land of WM. & CHARLES COPADGE and divide the same according to the true intent & meaning of the Last Will and Testamt, of their deced„ Father, and make report thereof to the next Court; In Obedience to the abovesd. Order I the subscriber did on the 5th day of June Ano: 1710 survey & divide the land aforesd., a Survey & Platt whereof is here pr:sented wherein my whole proceedings may att large appeare;
Northumberld. County ss. Surveyed on the fifth day of June Anna 1710, THOMAS EYES and JOHN MEW. Chaine Carriers, sworne, pr:sent the Neighbors adjoying in Obedience to an Order of this County Court dated the 18th. day of May 1710, the Land of WILLIAM & CHARLES COPEDGE scituate lying & being in the County abovesd, in the Parish of GREAT WICCOCOMOCO on the Maine Branches of SCOTLAND MILL SWAMP being part of a Pattent granted to Mr. JAMES HILL of this County dated the 10th day of May 1661, for 350 acres of land & by the sd. HILL sold to THOMAS DAVIS & DANIELL BIXEBE, and by the said DAVIS & BIXEBE sold to WILLIAM COPEDGE, late of this County, deced., the other part of the Pattent being sold by the said HILL to Mr. THOMAS BURBERY & now in ye possession of Mr. MALACHI BURBERY, all which may att large appeare by the County Court Office (vizi) Begining for the land aforesd. at a red Oak being a corner tree standing in an old line of marked trees formerly called the Line of FOXCROFT, and standing on a poynt betweene the heads of two Branches that issue out of the Eastward Swamp of FISHING CREEKE on HOWSONS CREEKE and extending thence along an old line of marked trees dividing this land from the land of JOHN COPEDGE, its severall changes betweene South by East and South by West, which being reduct: to a strait line is So: two degrees East 365 pole 12 links to a Stake in the head of a Valley issueing out of GREENE BRANCH, in ye WOLFE PM NECK. &standing betweene 2 inward marked trees. from thence along an old Line of marked trees divideing this land & land lately Pattented by WILLIAM COPEDGE its severall changes which being reduced to a strait line is North 65 degrees 30: minutes West 132 pole to a new marked red Oak being a corner tree that stands neare to WEBBS BRANCH on the Westward side of sd. Branch, thence along a line of new marked trees North 20: degrees East 916 pole to the first menconed red Oak in the line of FOXCROFT. includeing part of the Orchard & Dwelling Houses with 121 acres of land, then for the other part returning along the new line South 20: degrees West 316 pole to the corner red Oak on WEBBS BRANCH. thence along an old line which being reduc't to a strait line is North 59 degrees West 140 pole to a corner white Oak in a line divideing this land & the land of RICHARD WEBB: & being a corner tree to this Land and the Land of Mr. BURBERY, thence along Mr. BURBERYes line North East 320 pole to the first beginin g red Oak, includeing part & 40 foot tobacco house with 121 acres of land
