      Robert Lawson, January 23, 1798; June 25, 1798
      I, Robert Lawson of CC being of sound mind and memory
      In case my father James Lawson now in {Glasgow} Scotland or his assignees should demand the slaves mortgaged by the late John Semple to my father who were not sold by the commissioners of the sale of John Semple's estate in the year 1788 and now in my possession to deliver to my father or assignees the slaves abovementioned. Also if my father or assignees should demand a segment of the books and papers relative thereto kept for transactions as attorney for them in Maryland and Virginia since he left this country, also if my father or his assignees should demand the land in Fairfax County which I bought at the sale of John Semple's estate to secure a part of the money then due and ordered to be paid unto me, then and in case of the above demands being make, if my father or his assignees will pay my executors the money due to me for negroes and advances with interest which will appear by the books kept by me for that purpose, also pay wages due (since the amendment between the administrators of the late Gove Phil Ludwell Lee and me by auditors appointed for that purpose for my management and care of that business and will indemnify and save harmless my executors and legatees herein after named from all debts contracts and engagements owing and entered into by me on account of the business above mentioned; then and in that case I hereby direct and empower my executors herein after named to deliver up possession of the books and papers foresaid and convey the land above mentioned to my father or his assignees.
      To sister Mary Lawson now residing with me and her heirs, all my lands whereon I now live and all the lands belonging to me in Charles County. Also my land in Fairfax County in the commonwealth of Virginia on condition that the said land is not conveyed by my executors to my father or his assignees on the terms and conditions above mentioned.
      To said sister Mary Lawson and sister Agnes Lawson at present in Glasgow, Scotland, my personal property and back debts in this state and Virginia.

      Charles County Land Records 1796-1799; Liber IB-2 {Abstract by Mike Marshall}; Page 468. Deed: at the request of George Jenkins, the following deed was recorded December 7th 1798.
      Indenture made August 2, 1798; George Jenkins and Mary Jenkins his wife of one part and John Ward of Augustine of the other part. Whereas Robert Lawson now deceased by his will bearing date January 23, 1798 did devise "To sister Mary Lawson now residing with me and her heirs, all my lands whereon I now live and all the lands belonging to me in Charles County. Also my land in Fairfax County in the commonwealth of Virginia on condition that the said land is not conveyed by my executors to my father or his assignees on the terms and conditions above mentioned" and whereas Mary Lawson previous to her intermarriage with George Jenkins gave her bond conditioned to convey to Agnes Lawson her sister then residing in Scotland one moiety of the aforementioned lands devised her in case her sister came to the United States of America. Now this indenture Witnesseth that George Jenkins and Mary Jenkins his wife in consideration of 500 pounds paid by John Ward of Augustine doth assigns during the natural life of George Jenkins all the aforementioned lands situated CC including the lands Robert Lawson devised to Mary Lawson now wife of George Jenkins subject to the condition mentioned in the said devise and to the bond of conveyance before mentioned.
