      Hi Trisha,

      Thanks for your note.

The Smoots lived all over the place in Charles County , but I’m sure the property you now own belonged to Theophilius Smoot. I checked Charles County deeds and then I looked to see if TS had a will—he did.

The will was made November 5, 1890 and admitted to probate on February 3, 1891. On page 2 of the will he devised to his son Winfield Smoot--the land commonly called "Johnson’s Place" lying part in St. Mary’s County and partly in Charles County, adjoining Charlotte Hall school land, 70 acres. It just doesn’t get any better than this in terms of proof. His will is recorded Charles County Wills, 1874-1897, Volume MT18, p. 399-402 (images 423-426) and can be found on line at Family Search, https://familysearch.org/search You’ll have to establish and pass and user to access those particular records but it’s fast and easy.

Another good place and where I found deeds for Theophilius Dent is at http://www.mdlandrec.net/msa/stagser/s1700/s1741/cfm/index.cfm Same thing re: pass and user. I forget which one I found Johnson’s Place mentioned, but it was in one of the following deeds: RHM 1, 5; JS 2, 261; JHC 1, 140; BGS 1, 367; and BGS 4, 462. A tip—for earlier deeds in Charles County —whoever did the index decided that JB was IB, so when you look up the particular deed, substitute the I for the J.

I’m sure there must have been a house, but is long gone by now. Have you tried to contact any descendants to see if there was a picture taken at any point?

From: Marriages and Deaths St. Mary's County Maryland, 1634-1900, by Margaret K. Fresco, page 272.

"SMOOT, Joseph Alexander, b. 1856 at "Walnut Hill" near Charlotte Hall, s/Theophilus & Amelia Harrison Smoot, d. 10/17/1935, m. (1) 10 Jan 1883, Fannie Jackson, dau/Rev. Jackson of Charles Co. Md. Fannie d. 1883., (2) 4 Jan 1893, Virginia Avondale Tippett, dau/John Wesley Tippett & Miss Joseph Ann Bean of the Patuxent at All Faith P.E. ch. Dr. Lewis M. Tippett brother of bride, gave her away & Rev. Theo Smoot, brother of groom, best man."

The attached deed (3 pages) shows the property of John Benjamin Dent being sold to Theophilus Smoot by his heirs. Where there was a house I would have no idea. A search of the Charles County tax records may show that. Have you ever located the cemetery? The house would have been not be all that far away. I have a friend who may be able to help locate the foundation and he probably wouldn’t charge you very much to come out for a look. Let me know and I’ll put the two of you in contact.

Hello. Your emails have been of immense help to me. With new info from the Md. Preservation Society about Dents and Smoots living directly behind my property ( WHALEN RD ), on what is now known as Beethoven Place property off of rte 6 west in Charlotte Hall, I feel as if I am coming closer to the question----where did the Smoots live? I have searched Joseph A. Smoot and looked all over for a residence, and the location named WALNUT HILL comes up. Was or is there a home that is connected with Smoots? There was a Smoot hotel in 1900 called SMOOT HOTEL where Casey Jones now stands in LaPlata. It was huge and ornate.

Did Wm. Smute live in Charlotte Hall? There is a map of Smoot Creek dated 1690. It is in the SMOOTS OF MD. AND VA. book that I read and reread a lot. Is that map showing a pond or creek right off of rte 6 west or somewhere else in Chas. Co.?
