Agnes Benfield who m. Alexander Suite/Suit was probably d/o Samuel Benfield and Dorothy Spalding.

In the book "Catholic Families of Southern Maryland", we see that Samuel BENFIELD (Catholic) was located in St. Mary's Co. area for a brief period ca. 1770 and he & wife, Dorothy had a daughter, Mary Ann Benfield baptized in the Roman Catholic Church in 1770 (I think it was on page 7). The Godparents/sponsors were Jane Spalden and sister Dorothy. I assume she was a nun although the word sister was not capitalized.

Due to her 1784 marriage date, I believe that Agnes Benfield must've been born shortly before her sister's 1770 baptism date.

Apparently Samuel Benfield was the same man who had lived in Berks Co. PA near Phila.

Samuel Benfield died in Berks Co. PA not Indiana.
The Benfield family were from Berks Co. PA.

Samuel Benfield who d. 1831--had his will filed in Berks Co. PA and mentions a John Benfield (Berks Co. PA 6 16)--*not sure how to get a copy.

His grave is on findagrave.com at this link:

But I don't know where Dorothy Spalding is buried or when she died.

From the roster of Captain Joshua Beall's Company of Maryland Troops(Dates: 10-9-1757 to 12-30-1758)
Private, Benfield, Samuel, October 9,1757/May 31, 1758. 234 days, deserted.

I also saw that Capt. Josiah Beall's Co. at that same time--ALSO included David Hellen (written as Hillen) whose will was later witnessed Bet. 1764 - 1768 by Peter Banner.

David HILLEN (*I assume he is supposed to be HELLEN) in same co. October 9, 1757 to December 7, 1757, 60 days, discharged. (**man named jno hillen in same co. also discharged. also was a jacob hillen too.)

David HELLEN is ALSO very significant in that military record with Sameul BENFIELD-- because Peter BANNER, father of Benajamin BANNER who lived next door to Benjamin SUIT in St. Mary's Co. MD (1800) witnessed the will of David HELLEN in Calvert Co. MD but it was probated in St. Mary's Co. MD 10/6/1764 & proved 8/2/1768.

Peter Banner was father-in-law of my James Suite/Suit. James Suite was brother of Alexander Suite who would then become Samuel Benfield's future son-in-law. Peter BANNER lived next door to Benjamin SUIT in the St. Mary's Co. MD federal census.

Benjamin SUIT was father of Alexander SUIT who we know married Agnes BENFIELD, d/o Samuel BENFIELD (who is listed in the above militia roster) in 1784 in Greene Co. TN.

Furthermore, it does prove that Samuel BENFIELD had lived in this part of MD and was connected to David HELLEN who was connected to Peter BANNER (proven by Hellen's will) who was father of Benjamin BANNER who lived next door to Benjamin SUIT in 1800 and was brother of Anna BANNER who married James SUIT who I had thought was Benjamin SUIT's son--now I am not sure who he was--but he was my direct ancestor. But we do know for positive now that Alexander Suit was the son of Benjamin SUIT who d. 1810 in St. Mary's Co. MD.

Need to find out if there were any surviving Catholic records for Balto. Co. MD, Harford Co. MD and vicinity for 1770-1780 or earlier (1750's as the Benfields were Catholic and found in a St. Mary's Co. MD record as having a Catholic daughter baptized.)
