The first marriage listing: Joshua to Elizabeth Briscoe, sur Charles Polke, 5 Apr 1786 Wm Taylor.
The bride is Elizabeth Compton, widow of Walter Briscoe. She was born May 21, 1742 and was the daughter of Matthew Compton, Jr. and Rachel Howard.
Walter Briscoe was the son of Philip Briscoe, Jr. and Susanna Williamson.
Walter Briscoe and Elizabeth Compton were married May 13, 1762 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Charles Co.
Bob Moore and I collaborated on this family several years ago. Part of Bob's note:
Note to me from Bob Moore (Patboblex@aol.com, 4/13/2003):
"Thanks so much, Linda. The particular Briscoe that I am also wondering
about in terms of ancestry is Walter Briscoe, d. 1783-85, will written in
Pa., rec. in Nelson County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Compton, who was a
Briscoe descendant herself." (According to a note I had from Carol
Mitchell's research, Walter drowned while crossing the Ohio River, LDR).
"Walter's widow came to Nelson County, Kentucky. and in 1786, m. my ancestor Joshua Hobbs of Frederick Co. By Walter Briscoe she had Stephen, Walter and four daughters, not named by name in will. One of them, though, was Cassandra,
who married John Hobbs, her step brother. And Stephen Briscoe married Sarah
Hobbs, John's sister. There's one little confusing matter in that Joshua
Hobbs and Elizabeth sold land in Frederick County, and supposedly signed the
deed there some time after they were recorded as being married in Kentucky."
In the meantime, I can give you more about Elizabeth Compton Briscoe Hobbs.
She died as the wife of Joshua Hobbs (b. ca. 1740s, moved from Frederick
Co., Md. to Nelson County, Kentucky.). Joshua married again in 1803 to Mrs.
Christian Brittingham (Hill) Aydelott. Anyway, Elizabeth's will appears in
Nelson Co. Will Book A, Page 328, wr. no date given, pr. 14 March 1797. Here
is the abstract. Husband Joshua Hobbs to have the land where we live during
his lifetime, one half at his disposal at his decease, other half to be
divided between daughters Cynthia, Elizabeth, Sarah and deceased daughter
Cassandra Hobbs' two daughters Elizabeth and Margaret [Joshua's son John
married Elizabeth's daughter Cassandra in Nelson Co.], but if both die
before age 16, their share to their brother John Hobbs. To son Walter 100
acres of land, Stephen 70 pounds, friend Mary Canady to have negro girl.
Witn: Elisha Spurrier, Joseph Spurrier, Edmo. H. Comton."
Edmund Howard Compton, the witness to Elizabeth's will, was her brother.
She married Walter BRISCOE 21 May 1762 in Charles, Co, , Md. He was born ABT 1740 in of, Charles, Co, Md.
