      1722-1730 Essex County, Virginia Wills, Bonds & Inventories, No. 4; [John Frederick Dorman]; Page 160-61. Will of Richard Covington of St. Ann's Parish in Essex County being sick and Weak of body, dated 24 March 1725.
      Unto my daughter Mary Grose ten shillings, she having been formally advanced by me.
      Unto my daughter Elizabeth Searle ten shillings, she having been formally advanced by me.
      Unto my daughter Sarah Smith ten shillings, she having been formally advanced by me.
      Unto my daughter, Ann Hawkins ten shillings, she having been formally advahced by me.
      Unto my grandson Covington Searle a Negro girl Floreereserving to my daughter Eliza Searle the use of the said Negro during her life. -
      Unto my son Richard Covington all my tract whereon I now live.
      Unto my son Francis Covington the plantation whereon he now lives with as much land nearest thereto adjoining as will make 200 acres.
      To my son Francis all that my tract in Southfarnham Parish on the branchee of Gilson's Creek.
      Unto my sons Thomas and John Covington all the remaining part of my land in St. Ann's Parish on the branches of Occupatia Creek to be equally devided
      If either of my sons Francis, Thomas or John should die without issue his part of land shall be equally between the survivor of them.
      My loving wife Ann Covington have her right of dower in this my dwelling plantation and my seat of land purchased of Tandy on the branches of Gilson's Creek.
      All my Negros, stocks of cattle, hoggs and other kinds and all my houshold goods be equally devided amongst my loving wife and my sons Richard, Francis, Thomas, John and my daughter Winefret Covington.
      My son Francis and daughter Winefret take their estates immediately after my decease.
      My sons Thomas and John receive their estates when they shall attain to the age of eighteen years.
      My son Thomas and John Covington be under the care and tuition of Thomas Waring untill they attain the age of eighteen years.
      My sons Richard and Francis Covington executors and my daughter Wine fret executrix.

      IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN the 19 day of March one thousand seven hundred and thirty three I THOMAS COVINGTON of the County of Essex of St. Anns Parish in ye Colony of Virginia being sick & weak in body but of sound and perfect memory (praise be given to God for the same) and knowing the uncertainty of this life on this Earth and being desirous to settle things in order do make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say First and principally I commend
      my Soul to Almighty God my Creator and my body to the Earth from whence it was taken to be buried in such decent and Christian manner as my Executors hereafter mentioned shall be thought meet and convenient, and as touching such worldly estate that the Lord in his mercy has lent me my will & meaning is the same shall be bestowed as hereafter by this my will expressed. I give devise & dispose of the same in the following manner and form.
      IMPRIMIS I give and bequeath unto my three Brothers RICHARD COVINGTON, FRANCIS COVINGTON & JOHN COVINGTON to Witt my nagrs, here named Essex, Dinah, jack and all the rest of my personal estate both royal' & personable to be equally divided between them to them and their heirs forever.
      LASTLY I do appoint my Brother Richd. Covington, ffrancis Covington and John Covington my whole and sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament & I do hereby utterly disallow revoke & disannull all other wills Testaments whatsoever. IN WITNESS my hand and seal ye day &

      THIS INDENTURE made this the 25th and Twenty Sixth day of April 1738 Between JOHN COVINGTON of the County of Essex of the one part and JOHN WILLARD of the same County Witnesseth that the said John Covington for sum of forty pounds Ten shillings Current money of Virginia to him secured to be paid by said John Willard hath confirmed unto the said John Willard now in his actual possession by virtue of lease for one whole year and by force of the Statute for transferring uses into possession all that parcell of land containing One hundred and sixty two acres being in the Parish of St. Ann and County of Essex and bounded Begining at a Corner tree of Collonel ARMSTEDs being a Hickory from thence bounded by PAGES line to a red oak where it corners from thence on a strait line where EDWARD CLARKs road strikes out of the MAIN ROAD so bounded by the said Main Road to the BRIDGE from the said Bridge up the run to Armsteds line from thence guided by the sd Armisteds line to the Beginning tree and now in the occupation of the said John Willard....

      THIS INDENTURE made this Eighth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fourty four By and Between JOHN COVENTON of the Parish of SAINT ANNs in Essex County and Colony of Virginia of the one part and BARTHOLOMEW CLARK of the County and Colony aforesaid of the other part; Witnesseth that the said JOHN COVENTON for the sum of Seven hundred and fifty pounds of Lawfull Tobacco of Virginia to him in hand paid hath granted unto the said BARTHOLOMEW CLARK his heirs and assigns, all one certain parcell of Land containing Twenty five acres of Land being in the County of Essex, to wit, beginning at CLARK's line in the Spring Branch running thence down the said Branch to ye main OCCUPATIA RUN, from thence down the said Run to the mouth of ye BEE TREE BRANCH, from thence up the said Branch to CLARK's line, and so with ye sd. line to ye first beginning, To have and to hold the said tract of Land with the appurtenances unto ye sd. BARTHOLOMEW CLARK his heirs and assigns forever; And the said JOHN COVENTON the said parcell of Land unto him will warrant and forever defend by these presents against the claim of him his heirs and assigns or any other person whatsoever and loth covenant that the premisses are clearly discharged from all Incumbrances &c., the quit rents which shall hereafter become due to our Sovereign Lord the King only excepted; and ye said BARTHOLOMEW CLARK his heirs and assigns lawfully may occupy the same without the lawfull lett of him the said JOHN COVENTON or any other persons whatsoever; And also that MARY, his Wife, relinquish her right of Dover in ye said premisses when she is thereunto reasonably required; In Witness whereof the said JOHN COVENTON hath set his hand and seal
