Edward Semmes' Will,
I, Edward Semmes (Physician) am sick & weak of body but of sound mind & memory, Firstly, I want all my just debts paid. Secondly, I leave my children to the care of Smith Middleton, their grandfather, to live with him until my youngest child, George Semmes, arrives to the age of 18 years. Thirdly, I want all my estate, both real and personal, kept together until my youngest child George, is 18 years old, for a sufficient maintenance & education of all my children, Elizabeth, Thos, Mary Hawkins, & George Semmes, except such part of my stock, household furniture, & plantation utensils as my executors may choose to dispose of.
To my daughters Elizabeth Semmes and Mary Hawkins Semmes
- to each, 2 of my Negroes, to be chosen by my executors, and delivered to her on her day of marriage or when my son George turns 18.
To my sons Thomas Semmes & George Semmes - all my land, to be equally divided between them, reserving the use of sd land for all my children until my youngest child
turns 18; then to my sons Thomas and George, as afd. The rest of my estate is to be equally divided among all 4 of my children, as afd, when my youngest child turns 18. My executor may rent out my land and hire out my Negroes if he thinks it best for my children.
