DIED, in this town, on yesterday morning (i.e. 28 MAR 1832), after a few hours illness,
Mr. JOSEPH SEMMES, in the 85th year of his age. His funeral will take place this evening,
at 4 o'clock, from his late residence, which his friends and acquaintances are respectfully

To son Joseph Simmes, all my tract of land lying on Peterimuxen {sic Piccawaxen} creek in Charles County, called Hammil Out Witted, containing 150 acres in fee simple.
To daughter Anne Simpson, negro Will.
To son Robert Doyne Simmes, one cow and calf, also my best walnet or cheritee table.
To grandson Phelbert Francis Simmes when he arrives to the the age of 18 yrs, negro Harry provided his mother Mary Simmes should be then deceased otherwise I give her the use and profit until her decease.
To granddaughter Priscilla Simms at 18yrs, negro Winney provided her mother Mary Simmes should be then deceased otherwise I give her the use and profit until her decease.
Item: my will and desire is that my negro man Lewis shall be hired out yearly by my executors and the profits arising therefrom to be applied by them for the education and benefit of my daughter Mary Simmes, wife of Joseph M. Simmes children.
To survivors of Mary Simmes, wife of Joseph M. Simmes, the residue of my estate equally divided
Item: it is my will and desire that not one article of my property willed by me to my daughter Mary Simmes and to her children shall ever be removed out of this state whatsoever.

Mary Pye's Will.
I, Mary Pye of CC, am sick and weak of body but of sound and disposing memory.
To my niece Elizabeth Pye - 2 Negroes, Nace and Joe. Also my silver buckles.
To Revd Ignatious Matthews - I want my executor to sell my other Negro, Len, to some Catholic, and pay my just debts out of the money, and the balance I leave to the Revd Ignatious Matthews, one half of which I desire him to distribute among the poor. The other half he may use as he pleases.
To my niece Margaret Simmes - my horse and saddle, bed and chest, and my mourning ring and the tobacco that Spalding owes me if I don't make use if it in my lifetime and whatever part of my wearing apparel she chooses; what I have left Mrs. Simmes may not be appraised in my estate.
To Miss Ann Philpott - the tobacco that the widow Kerrick and the widow Thomas owe me if I don't make use if it in my lifetime.

I, Walter Pye of CC, for and in consideration that Joseph Semmes of Montgomery County, has heretofore become my security on a note of hand payable to James Perry of Montgomery County and dated Oct 16, 1782 for the payment of 44 £8 shillings with interest thereon and costs of suit, have granted to sd Joseph Semmes, and hereby sell and deliver to sd Semmes, as an indemnification to him on the afd suretyship, 1 Negro girl named Letty, 1 black mare, 13 foot mahogany card table, 1 mahogany knife case, a debt owing to me by Nicholas Lewis Sewell of St. Mary's County for 53 £14 shillings and 6 pence, and another debt due to me on note of hand from Eleanor Nottingham for 8 £8 shillings. I, Joseph Semmes of Ignatius, of Montgomery, for 1000 £, have sold to Hoskins Hanson and Benjamin Douglass of CC, the following goods and chattels, to wit, 12 Negroes: women called Alice & Fanny; boys named Daniel, Peter, & Charles; girls named Ann, Charity, Mary, & Candis; men named Nace, Nace [sic], & Gusty. We, Joseph Semmes of Igns and Margaret, his wife, relict of Jesse Matthews, late of CC, decd, for 100 £, have sold to Luke Francis Matthews, all manner of dower which ad Margaret Semmes has to all the lands, tenements, and hereditaments which belonged to Jesse Matthews at any time during the coverture between him and sd Margaret Semmes, situated in CC or elsewhere, and also all claim that sd Joseph Semmes has to sd messuages, lands, tenements, and hereditaments, by virtue of his marriage with sd Margaret.
