William was age 70-80 in the 1830 Census, therefore born between 1750-1760. In the 1810 Census, when William would have been age 50-60, his household consisted of 1 male over age 45 (himself), 1 female over age 45 (his wife, who was age 60-70 in the 1830 Census and therefore age 45-50 in 1810). Also 1 male under 10 (who could possibly have been John S. PICKETT), 1 female age 26-44 , 1 male age 10-15 and 1 female under 10.

      Court Order Book 2, page 106, 22 February 1819

It was on February 22, 1819 that SALLY, "a negroe slave, the property of Richard Southgate" was charged with murder. "In discharge of his recognizance, "Richard, who was the commonwealth attorney for Campbell County, "brought forward the prisoner to the Bar." Nathaniel G Pendleton was appointed commonwealth attorney pro tempore to prosecute Sally.

On February 24, it was charged that "on the 4th day of February 1819, Sally a mulatto woman slave, about 18 years of age, the property of Richard Southgate, not having the fear of God before her eyes, but being seduced by the instigation of the Devil, did kill and murder, by drowning and suffication (sic), an infant male child, the offspring of the said Sally of which she had been previously delivered as the natural mother."

The jury, consisting of John Rust, William McCoy, John Griffith, James Drysdale, John Drysdale, William McCarty, William Pickett, Frederick Klette, John Winston, David Rust, George Roberts and John Frazier, after hearing all the testimony, declared "Sally the prisoner at the Bar, not guilty."
