CRAIK, William, a Representative from Maryland; born near Port Tobacco, Md., October 31, 1761; attended Delameve School in Frederick County; studied law; was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Port Tobacco and Leonardtown; moved to Baltimore; was appointed chief justice of the fifth judicial district of Maryland January 13, 1793, and served until his resignation in 1796; elected to the Fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jeremiah Crabb; reelected to the Fifth and Sixth Congresses and served from December 5, 1796, to March 3, 1801; again appointed chief justice of the fifth judicial district of Maryland and served from October 20, 1801, to January 28, 1802; resided in Frederick County, Maryland.; died prior to 1814.

CRAIK, WILLIAM (1761-1). BORN: on October
3, 1761, near Port Tobacco, Charles County;
probably only son. NATIVE: second generation.
RESIDED: in Charles County; Baltimore County;
Frederick County, 1793. FAMILY BACKGROUND.
FATHER: Dr. James Craik (173 1-1 8 14, graduated
from the University of Edinburgh; emigrated from
Scotland; accompanied George Washington on an
expdtion against the French and Indians in 1754,
and was with Edward Braddock in 1755. He was
director-general of the hospital at the seige of
Yorktown in 1781. After the Revolution he was
invited by Washington to settle near Mount Vernon.
Craik served as Washington's physician; he
died in Fairfax County, Virginia, on February 6,
1814. MOTHER: Marianne Ewell (1739-1815), originally
from Prince William County, Virginia. MARRIED
on November 9, 1796, in Allegany County to
Hannah Hall. PRIVATE CAREER. EDUCATION: literate,
attended Delamere (Delameve?) school in
Frederick County. SOCIAL STATUS AND ACTIVITIES:
&q., 1790. OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE: lawyer,
practiced in Port Tobacco, Charles County, and

Jul 17, 1793 from Charles Sewall (Sewell) of CC, planter, and Elizabeth, his wife, to William Craik of Montgomery County, for 84 £7 shillings and 6 pence, a parcel of land in CC, being part of a tract of land called Lynes' Delight, formerly granted to Philip Lynes, bounded by James Craik's part of Lynes' Delight purchased from the State of Maryland, the divisional line of sd tract between sd James Craik and Charles Coodrick, land called Moores Ditch, containing 45 acres. Charles County Land Records 1792-1796; Liber N#4; Page 555. Mar 26, 1796 from James Simms, late Sheriff of CC, to Michael Jenifer Stone of CC, for 5 shillings, the lands described below. On Jan 9, 1794, a writ of fieri facias issued out of the General Court of the Western Shore of Maryland to sd Simms, commanding him that of the property of Thomas Semmes, late of CC, he should cause to be made 2666 £13 shillings and 4 pence, a certain debt, and 785 lbs of tobacco, costs of suit, and 36 lb. of tobacco, additional costs, and that he should have those sums before the Judges of the General Court to be held in the City of Annapolis on the 2nd Tuesday in May, then next, to render to Joseph Semmes the debt and costs of suit, whereof sd Thomas Semmes was convicted. Sd Simms reported to sd Judges that, by virtue of sd writ, he, among other property sold to another person, levied, as per schedule, and sold to sd Stone, the lands and tenements of sd Thomas Semmes, to the amount of 176 £. After due notice, sd Simms, then CC Sheriff, on Apr 14, 1794, exposed to sale all the lands and tenements that sd Thomas Semmes then held or was seized of (excepting only 57.33 acres heretofore sold by sd Simms, then CC Sheriff, to William Craik), lying on the east side of the middle of the run or branch of Port Tobacco Cr, being part of a tract of land called St. Edmunds, and of a tract of land called Chandlers Invention and of any other tracts of land which sd Thomas Semmes was seized of or had a any right to, lying on the east side of the sd run or branch in CC, which lands are supposed to contain about 140 acres, taken on a writ of fieri facias afd to public sale to the highest bidder. Sd Michael Jenifer Stone became the highest bidder for all the lands of sd Thomas Semmes lying on the east side of the middle of the main run or branch of Port Tobacco Cr in CC, for 176 £, and has since paid the purchase money, and wants to obtain a complete title to sd Land's, hence this deed. This deed is for the lands that sd Thomas Semmes held or was seized of or any right to on Apr 14, 1794, lying on the east side of the middle of the main run o branch of Port Tobacco Cr. Charles County Land Records 1796-1799; Liber IB-2 {Abstract by Mike Marshall}; Page 194. Deed: at the request of Doctor Daniel Jenifer, the following deed was recorded July 19th 1797.
Indenture made June 19, 1797; Joseph Luckett in consideration of 200 pounds current money paid by William Craik planter of Montgomery County hath sold two tracts of land. One called "May Day" which was formerly in the possession of Ledstone Smallwood, father to the late Ledstone Smallwood deceased and conveyed by the father in his will dated February 22, 1755 to his son. And was thereafter in possession of Ledstone the son, and thereafter bargained sold and confirmed unto the said Ledstone the son by a certain Esther Adams widow {Hester Smallwood widow of Benjamin Adams}, by deed bearing date of March 5, 1763 which was thereafter conveyed by said Ledstone the son unto a certain William Rhody Luckett father to the said Joseph Lucket by deed bearing date January 23, 1771, October 25, 1773 and October 26, 1773 and thereafter devised to the said Jospeh Luckett by William Rhody Luckett; and is all that part of "May Day" which remained undisposed of by the said Ledstone Smallwood the father and which is clear of the tract of land called "Moore's Ditch" and Saint Edmonds", and the other tract of land called "The Addition to May Day" clear of elder surveys.

Charles County Land Records 1796-1799; Liber IB-2 {Abstract by Mike Marshall}; Page 47. Power of Attorney: at the request of Dr. Daniel Jenifer, the following Power of Attorney, Certificate and Acknowledgement was recorded August 22nd 1796.
This indenture dated July 8, 1796, James Craik of the town of Alexandria, Virginia physician in consideration of 5 shillings by William Craik of Georgetown (his son) sells all those several tracts lying in CC to wit:
1) "Prospect Hill" being a resurvey of "Saint Edmonds" originally on the March 10, 1770 granted Edmond Linsey, and the "Gore" originally on the November 1737 granted Ledstone Smallwood and is bounded as by patented bearing date June 16, 1796 containing 181 acres and mentions tracts "Welcome", "May Day", "Chandlers Hills" in the bounds.
2) A part or moiety of a tract called "Moore's Ditch" binding with the lands of George Goodrick and Robert Goodrick and containing 234 acres.
3) "May Day" formerly in the possession of William Smallwood containing 100 acres.

Indenture made November 13, 1798; William Craik of Montgomery County, Maryland, planter in consideration of 4,000 pounds current money of Maryland paid by Francis Newman hath sold the several tracts of land; "Prospect Hill" being a resurvey of two tracts of land, St. Edmonds", "The Gore", "May Day clear of Moore's Ditch", "Moore's Ditch", "Addition to May Day" with boundaries and courses as recorded in a deed of indenture from James Craik to William Craik bearig date July 8, 1796, and in a deed of indenture from Joseph Luckett to William Craik bearing date June 19, 1797. Also one other tract of land being part of Simms Delight formerly granted to Philip Lynes, with meters and boundaries contained in a deed of Indenture from Charles Sewell and Elizabeth Sewell his wife to William Craik July 14, 1793. Also one other tract of land being part of "Chandlers Invention" with meters and boundaries contained in a deed of Indenture from James Simms to William Craik July 14, 1796.
