WILL OF GEORGE GRANT
In the name of God, Amen:
I, George Grant, Sr, of the County, of Mason and State of Kentucky, being in good health and sound mind, and well knowing the certainty of death, doth make and order this my last Will and Testament in form and manner as follows:
I give and bequeath to my wife, Mary Grant, my whole estate both real and personal, during her life or widowhood. And after my death my desire is that at the death or marriage of my wife that my estate be divided amongst my son, George Grant, Jr, and daughters as follows, namely: My son, George Grant and my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant, Judy Grant, and likewise my daughter, Nancy Moss, once Nancy Grant; and at the death of my daughter, Nancy Moss, her part of my estate to be divided amongst the children of my daughter, Nancy Moss.
I likewise leave to the children of my son James Grant, One child's part to be divided amongst them.
To my daughter, Betsy Lowry, once Betsy Grant, I have already given negroes Lucy and Milly, with their increase, which she has now in her possession; and my daughter Betsy Lowry nor her heirs to have any other part of my negro property.
I likewise give to my daughter, Mary Grant, negroes, Dick and George and Minny, with her increase.
To my daughter, Peggy B. Grant, I give negroes Jerry and Willis and Lucy and Eliza, with their increase.
To my daughter, Judy Grant, I give negroes Daniel and Tom, and negro girls Phoebe and Lydia, with their increase.
And as I have given my children that have left me a bed and furniture, it is my desire that my daughters Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, have a bed well furnitured, each of them. And I likewise give to my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, all the quilts and counter panes of their own make, each their own; and after the death of myself and my wife, my desire is that my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, possess my land for a home as long as they live or keep un-married. At their death or marriage to belong to my son, George Grant.
The negroes I have given my daughters, Mary Grant, Peggy B. Grant and Judy Grant, is a free gift besides their share of what I die possessed of.
And lastly: I do appoint my son George Grant and Kendall Moss, my executors of this my last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of October, eighteen hundred and twenty four. (October 15, 1824).

We copied the Will of George Grant from what was supposed to have been the original entry, but from other records in our possession we believe the date of the probation of his will, as we here have it, is an error. Our records show the following family for George Grant and May Shackelford:
George Grant was born in Virginia, probably Fauquier County, November 30, 1740. And died in Mason County, Ky., November 30, 1836. This would indicate that he lived to be exactly 96 years of age, so it is entirely possible that the records in our possession are in error, and that he may have died in 1826 instead of 1836.
He married Mary Shackelford, eldest daughter of James and Elizabeth Scott-Shackelford, March 12, 1772. Mary Shackelford was born in Fauquier County, Va., January 20, 1752, and she died in Mason Co, Ky., August 25, 1836. They had the following children, shown in the following order:

Know all men .. I JOHN GRANT of parish Brunswick & county King George in consideration of the natural love & affection which I bear to my Sons & Daughters to wit JOHN GRANT, DANIEL GRANT, GEORGE GRANT, WILLIAM GRANT, ELIZABETH BRUCE, ROSAMOND WRIGHT, MARGARET GRANT & MARY GRANT & for their future advancement in the world give (them) all my estate reserving to myself the same during my natural life and after my decease to descend as follows - I give to my son John Grant all that parcel of land given to me by my Father WILLIAM GRANT & two negroes; to my sons Daniel Grant & George Grant all the land I hold in Prince William County to be equally divided between them; to my son William Grant, all the lands I purchased of JOHN CORBIN & STEPHEN HANSFORD .., to my daughter Mary one negro girl; to my daughter Margaret one feather bed and furniture; give to my Sons and Daughters (named again) eight negroes and their future increase to be equally divided between them .. 7th July 1757.

Benjamin Harrison of Brandon, Prince George leases George Grant 165 a.(in Fauquier Co.) for lives of him,wife Mary, and son George.
