Hod. Sir. Service to you & your Wife presented. These are to let you understand that I am ELIAS EDMONDS his Last Will & Testament, Sole Overseer of his Estate & see that his Children not be cheated nor defrauded of their Estate their Father left them, yet JOHN MERIDITH & WALTER HEARD not giveing the Court inteligen ce thereof as I hear obtained an Order for Administration of the Estate, nor I haveing not any notise thereof saying that his Mother in Law, Mrs. EDMONDS, made no Will, thereof the Court granted Letters of Administration (Now I can proved but the Court is so remoat that I cannot bring witnesses) that Mrs. FRANCES EDMONDS made a nun cupative Will which I know in Law is authentick besides there are great debts claimed by some, namely Mr. MERIDITH out of the Estate p accompt wch. I know is contrary to the Act of Assembly in such cases, yet notwithstanding, if it be MERIDITHs right God forbid but he should have it, but I can proved that the great accompt brought in against ELYAS his Estate did nothing appertain to ELYAS nor ought not to be paid out of the sd Estate all which I can prove & shall make appear at the next Court MERIDITH his pretence is that I am a PAPIST and ought not to have the bringing up of the Children which God knows was none of my intent but that some honest careful man shou'd breed them up & not diminish the Estate which I am shure is a good Virginia Estate. There is not all incerted in the Inventory besides the debts ought to be paid before Legacies. It was Mr. EDMONDS wil & desire that his Estate should not be administered on nor anyways alienated by appraisers, therefore I beseech you if it be possible not to grant Letters of Administration until the next Court held for this County for I conceave the Children to be in a desperate condition if you let the sd MERIDITH & HEARD proceed in what they desire the Inventory is not as yet proved nor the Will therefore good Sir. if it be possible grant a reference of all business of that Estate to the next Court held at Majr. CARTERs House where God willing I shall attend you God forbid but the wil of the deced should be performed so neer as maybe they are to have all the increase of their cattle both male & female you will say who will keep the Children upon those terms, I answer I will find those that shall keep them and give them better Education than those in whose custody they are I have that to show the Court under Mr. EDMONDS his hand that the Court doth not know of nor can yet conceave, Therefore I desire that administration may be suspended and all businesses concerning that Estate might to the next Court that I may be there that hath the whole oversight of the Estate & no man else, I know much concerning the greatest debts that are claimed & can I hope secure the Estate from paymt: of some of them. I pray Sir for the good of the fatherles & motherles Children be so Charitable as to stop proceeding and to grant this request to Sir your obliged friend & Servt, to use EDWIN CONAWAY

Postscript: Sir: He hath not put in security nor proved the Wil as yet, therefore the Court may be pleased to stop the proceedings all the tobacco belonging to the Estate upon thy Plantation is pd, away I known not who as yct will give a good account. for that do a great house kept it is I that according to my promise to the deced must & will from time to time question those that shall have the Estate for an account
