      Capt John Gregory born: 1623 in Stockwith, England died: 1676 Rappahannock County, Virginia Officer in the Colonial Militia. Emigrated to Virginia prior to 1656; settled on the north side of the James River in Charles County. 20 February 1663 had a grant of 600 acres in Rappahannock County. Vestryman in 1665.

      John Gregory wife was Elizabeth Bishop da of John Bishop b Abt 1600 in London, England d 21 April 1676 in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Immigrated in 1638 to James City, Virginia and Mary Elizabeth maiden name unknown.

      24 Oct 1653 Lancaster Co: JOHN GREGORY to pay levy on 3 tytheables to Mr. James Bagnall.

      14 Aug 1654 Lancaster Co: JOHN GREGORY mentioned as `from the upper parish of Nansemond Co'; it is believed that this JOHN GREGORY was pastor of Upper Parish, Nansemond Co. 1680. (ref: Clan Gregory, Wash.DC 1909)

      14 Aug 1654 Lancaster Co: Wm.Johnson assigns JOHN GREGORY all interest `in this pattente' does not give other detail. Wit: Richard Loes, Thos.Greefeth.

      24 Jan 1655: Thomas Smith, aged 24, deposes that on 4 Nov 1654 John Duce and Richard Vines of London, Master & Master's mate respectively of the `Swan' signed an undertaking to Philip Stretehaye and Charles Pleydell of London, mchts, to deliver sound and well condition negroes to Richard Howell, JOHN GREGORY and Wm.Thomas, residents of Barbadoes.

      6 Jun 1655 Lancaster Co: Order that JOHN GREGORY and John Sherlock view the housing built by John Edgecomb for Capt. Moore Fauntleroy and report.

      7 Dec 1655: JOHN GREGORY to pay levy on 3 tytheables to Mr. Bagnall. Also to be pd 150 lb tobo from the levy for a wolf's head.

      1656 Lancaster Co: John Bell before his death did by word of mouth give unto the Widd Bryant & her children 2 yearling calves and to his countryman afterwards naming Alexander Porteus at Morrattico his boat for a rememberance and to Thomas who was his mate liberty to plant upon his land this year and the rest of his estate he gave to Cyprian Bishop. s/James Bagnell, JOHN GREGORY. "Jurat in Cur 14 Jan 1656 recordat 20 Jan 1656"

      20 Feb 1663: JOHN GREGORY the elder bought 600 a. Hoskins Creek 20 Feb 1663. Robert Bishop bought 480 a. from Henry Awbrey which he willed to JOHN GREGORY JR. in 1676, and by JOHN's will in 1677 was given to MARY GREGORY. JOHN GREGORY JR. also gave 250 a. Hoskins Creek to his sister, Elizabeth Wheeler. RICHARD GREGORY SR. patented over 1700 a. in New Kent Co and a small acreage in Rappahannock Co. (ref: OUR MEADOR FAMILIES IN COLONIAL AMERICA, Victor P. Meador, Bernal M. Meador).

      2 Jun 1663: "To all to whom these presents shall come, Greetings...whereas now know ye that I, the sd Sir William Berkeley, Knight, Governor of VA, give and grant unto Thomas Meador 320 a. land situated on the S side of Hoskins Cr towards the head thereof in the Co of Rappahannock, and extendeth itself from a marked red oak standing in a small neck by the main run side of the creek aforesaid and nigh unto the plantation of John Gillet, thence by the sd run side 32 poles unto a marked oak on the westermost point of sd neck, thence along the northermost side of a Beaver Dam until you meet with a line of marked trees that leadeth unto a poplar by the edge of the sd Dam 48 poles, thence with the sd line South by West 272 poles to a marked pine on fallowing ground, thence E by S 125 poles to a white oak on the brow of a hill, thence E NE 28 poles to meet with the Westermost line of marked trees belonging to JOHN GREGORY, which divides this land and the land of the sd GREGORY, thence NE down to Hoskins Creek aforesd and finally parallel with the sd Creek 1818 poles unto the marked Red Oak first above mentioned. The sd land being due unto the sd Meader for transportation of 7 persons to this colony.       1667: Hugh Meads/Meades bought 100 a. S side Piscataway Cr in 1667 (Rapp.Co Dd Bk 5 p 349); he also had a grant of 200 a. N side Piscataway Cr which he shared with JOHN GRIGORY 4 Oct 1675. He died about 1684 when his 2 sons were yet minors; Hugh the younger was bound out to Thos.Harper who died, then to Wm.Leake (Rapp.Co Court Order Bk 1 p 136).       BISHOP, ROBERT, of the County of Rappahannock & Parish of Farnham.
      To John Grigory Jr., the land I bought of Mr Henry Awbrey to him and his heirs forever likewise all my personal estate. Executor John Grigory, Jr.
      Wit. THO : WHEELER, aged 30 years or thereabouts, JOHN GARNER, aged 25 years of thereabouts, JOHN X BURNETT.
      Later 24th of May 1676 he gave his Executor power and command to demand and receive two hundred and thirty five pounds of good tobacco of John Jones my brother-in-law which is to be paid by October 10, 1676 and the sd John Grigory is to produce an heifer with the sd tobo for the use of John Jones, Jr. with the increase of the sd. heifer untill the sd. John Jones comes of age and likewise I give John Grigory, Jr order to receive one heifer which is at Capt. John Grigory's pen marked with a cropp and a slitt in the left eare one year old of a red colour with her increase male and female when the said John Jones shall come of age and likewise one sow when the sd John Jones shall come of age and the sd John Grigory to keep the ad two heifers with their increase until the sd John Jones shall come of age and then deliver them with their increase.
