      By the Governer Capt. General of Virginia To all whom these presents shall come I RICHARD BENNETT Esqr. Governer & Capt. Generall of Virginia send greeting in our Lord God everlasting. Whereas THOMAS STEPHENS late of this Colony deced died lnstestate leaving an Estate of goods chattels cattle horses servants and whereof ELIZABETH the Relict of the sd STEPHENS hath made humble suit that Commission of Administration might be granted unto her of the same, Now Know ye that I sd RICHARD BENNETT Esqr. for the better ordering & service of the sd Estate & according to the Laws of this Colony and order of Lancaster Court bearing date the 6th of August 1654 do give grant unto the sd ELIZABETH STEPHENS the Administration of all & singular the goods rights & credits of the sd THOMAS STEPHENS deced. his Estate of what nature quality or conditions whatsoever it be of or in whose hands or custody soever it remaines within this Colony and do further appoint the sd ELIZABETH STEPHENS shall present to the Commissioners of Lancaster County either by herself or Attorney lawfully authorized at. the next Court a true & perfect Inventory of the sd deceds Estate lawfull appraised by sufficient men upon Oath, And further that she satisfy & pay all such debts of the deceds as remain due or owing from the sd Estate to any p:son or p:sons within this Colony as far forth as the said Estate shall extend and after such debts is paid that she the sd ELIZABETH STEPHENS shall bring a true & perfect Inventory & Accot. of the surplusage & remainder of the sd Estate to the Commissioners of Lancaster County as aforesaid, for the use of such p:son or p:sons to whom it doth of right properly belong or appertain.       THIS INDENTURE made the Seventh day of Febry: in the Seaventh year of the Reigne of our Sovereigne Lord George by the grace of God of Great Britain France & Ireland, King, Defender of the faith &c., Annoq: Domini one thousand seaven hundred thirty three & four; Between NATHANIELL MASON of Parish of Northfarnham in County of Richmd., Carpenter, & HANNAH his Wife of one part & WILLIAM DOWNMAN, JUNR, of abovesaid Parish & County, Gentleman, of other part; Witnesseth that NATHANIELL MASON & HANNAH his Wife in consideration of Forty two pounds Sterling money & Five thousand pounds of lawfull tobacco, one Feather Bedd, boulster rugg blanket, one pier of sheets to NATHANIELL MASON & HANNAH his Wife by WILLIAM DOWNMAN, JUNR. in hand paid, the receipt whereof NATHANIELL MASON & HANNAH his Wife doe hereby acknowledge, have & doe by these presents bargain & sell unto WILLIAM DOWNMAN his heirs one certain tract of land scituate in Parish of Northfarnham in County of Richmond containing Two hundred & fifty acres of land more or less, part of a Patent of Six hundred acres of land formerly granted to THOMAS STEPHENS dated ye twelfth of February 1652, which land lyes in Northfarnham Parish in County of Richmond on North side of MORATTICO CREEK, bounded W. by S. against the land formerly NICHOLAS FERMENs, S. & by E. upon MORATTICO CREEK, E. & by N. upon a Branch of MORATTICO CREEK. N. & by W. into the woods which said Six hundred acres of land descended to NATHANIEL CALE, Grand Son of THOMS: STEPHENS & by the Last Will & Testament of abovesd. NATHANIEL in Writing devised Two hundred & fifty acres of the above mentioned six hundd. acres of land to his the said NATHANIEL CALEs Sister, ELIZABETH KING. & said ELIZABETH KING dying without Will or conveying ye said Two hundred & fifty acres of land to any person, descended to her, the said ELIZABETH's Son, NATHANIEL MASON, heir at Law to his the said NATHANIEL MASON Mother, ELIZABETH MASON. To have & to hold the Two hundred & fifty acres of land with all houses tobacco houses profits & appurtenances in any ways appertaining unto WILLIAM DOWNMAN, JUNR his heirs; And NATHANIEL MASON and HANNAH his Wife & their heirs the land & premises unto WILLIAM DOWNMAN, JUNR, his heirs against the lawfull claime of all persons shall warrant & for ever defend discharged from all manner of incumbrances except the Quitrents which shall henceforth grow due; In Witness of all which the parties abovesaid to these p:sents interchangeably sett their hands & seales on the day & year above written
