The earliest mention of Gilbert Hamilton was in 1728 when he witnessed the wills of Thomas and Elizabeth Beale. In Deed Bk 9: page 6, 29 Mar 1734, he bought land 195 ΒΌ acres. In that deed he is termed Gilbert Hamilton, merchant. Although this is the earliest indexed deed for him, the deed implies (but does not state clearly) that he owned a piece of adjacent land. About the same time, Gilbert began filing suits against various persons who owed him money. These suits also indicate that he was a merchant. In 1734, Gilbert was commissioned court justice in Richmond County. He served many years in that capacity. His will written 31 Aug 1765, proved 1 Feb 1768. In his will, he makes his wife his only heir. Elizabeth Hamilton, another daughter, wrote her will in 1780/81 Loudoun County, VA, names her mother, Anne Hamilton, wits. Robert Hamilton and Janet Carter.
