      In the name of God, Amen. I Dennis McCarty gent (gentleman) of Prince William County
      (Fairfax Co. split off later that year in June 1742) do make this my last Will & Testament & do
      dispose of my worldly Estate in manner and form following.

      Imprimus (Latin “in the first place”) , it is my will and Desire that my two Executors hereafter
      named do pay all my just debts out of my Said Estate & that they do sell all that Tract of Land
      which I bought of Mr John Hereford in Prince William County & one thousand acres of Land
      which I hold in Stafford County lying on Acquia run to Enable them the better to pay the same.

      Item. I give to my Loving wife Sarah McCarty (she won’t pass away till 1786) one mulatto
      woman Slave named Martha for and during the Term of her natural life & her future increase if
      any to be divided in the Same manner as the rest of my Slaves hereafter is directed to be
      divided.

      Item. it is my will & desire that all the rest of my Slaves be equally Divided between my Loving
      wife Sarah & five Children viz. Sons Daniel (oldest, born 1725), Dennis (we have no record) &
      Thaddeus (born 1739) & Daughters Sarah (born 1731) & Ann (born 1730) only that my Son
      Dennis may have the mulatto boy David now apprenticed to John Allen joiner allotted to him in
      his part & that the negro Lad Harry now also an apprentice to the Said John Allen be allotted to
      my Son Daniel in his part.

      Item. It is my will that all the rest of my personal Estate of what nature or kind-soever be
      likewise equally Divided between my Said wife and Children except my plate1 which I give to my
      Son Daniel as also my wearing Apparel, pistols, Holsters, Holster caps, Colours [sic], Sword and
      other troopers caparisons.

      Item. It is my will that notwithstanding the devise of my Slaves as above that my (illegible words) maybe “friend John”) Minor gent do keep the negro boy called Dick now (more illegible words, probably: ("in his possession") to the use of him & his heirs.

      Item. I do appoint my brother Daniel McCarty (born 3 years later than Dennis) of Westmorland
      County gent & my friend & kinsman John Minor gent & my Son Daniel McCarty my Executors
      of this my Last will & Testament but it is my desire that as my son Daniel is not full age (he was
      16/17 years old at this time) that he may not act as my Executor untill [sic] he arrives thereto
      unless it be upon the Death or refusalls [sic] of one of my other Executors & I do hereby ratify
      and confirm this to be my only last will & Testament & I do revoke all other wills formerly by me
      made. In witness whereof I have hereunto Set my hand & the eighteenth day of March one
      thousand Seven hundred forty two.

      The witness’ Last Will & Testament of Denis McCarty gent deced (deceased) was proved by the
      oaths of John Sturman, William Payne & Richard Sturman three of the witnesses thereto.

      At a Court held for Fairfax County April the 21th: 1743 (looks like 8).
      The witness’ last will & Testament of Denis McCarty gent Deced was admitted to record & Sarah McCarty the widow having made oath according to Law on her motion & performing what is usual in Such cases Certificate is granted her for obtaining Letters of admn (with the will annexed) of the said Deced’s & Estate in due form.

      Know all men by these presents that we Sarah McCarty, John Minor, Thomas Pearson &
      Baldwin Dade are held and firmly bound unto William Fairfax Esqr the first Justice in the
      Commission of the peace for Fairfax County for and in behalf & to the sole use and behoof of
      the Justices of the said County & their Successors in the Sum of one thousand pounds Sterling
      (worth about $2.5 million USD today) to be paid to the Said William Fairfax his Executors admr
      (administrators) & Assignes [sic] to the which pay-ment well & truly to be made we bind
      ourselves & every of us our & every of our heirs Executors & admrs

      Jointly & Severally firmly by these presents sealed with our Seals & dated this 21st day of April 1743.
      The Condition of this obligation is Such that if the above bound Sarah McCarty admx with the
      will annexed of Denis McCarty gent deced do make or cause to be made a true and perfect
      Inventory of all and Singular the goods Chattels & Credits of the said Deced which have or Shall
      Come to the hands possession or knowledge of the said Sarah or into the hands or possession
      of any other person or persons for her & the Same so made do Exhibit or cause to be Exhibited
      into the County Court of Fairfax at such time as She Shall be thereto required by the said Court
      & the Same goods, Chattels & Credits & all the other Goods, Chattels & Credits of the said
      Deced at the time of his Death or which at any time after Shall Come to the hands & possession
      of the said Sarah or into the hands or possession of any other person or persons for her do well
      & truly admin-ister according to Law & further do make a just & true account of her actings &
      Doings therein when thereto required by the said Court & also do well & truly pay & Deliver all
      the Legacies Contained & Specefied [sic] in the said Testament as far as the Said Goods Chattels
      & Credits will thereunto Extend according to the value thereof & the Law Shall Charge her, then
      this obligation to be void, Else in force.

      (our records show he died March 24, 1742/3, less than a week later (age 37-8—very young), his
      wife was Sarah Ball (Geo Washington’s cousin) & they married in 1724, with children Daniel,
      James, Michael, Ann, Sarah, William, Thaddeus, Jeremiah. Sarah remarried Abraham Barnes (year unknown). Sarah eventually passed away in 1786. This means our personal list is very
      different than his will, which is more trustworthy. We are missing Dennis; and we have added 4
      children that he didn’t list in his will—James, Michael, William and Jeremiah....)

      amounting to ninety three pounds ten Shillings & four pence half penny

Lease and release; for 350 current money. 1800 acres at the Southwest Mountains ... the same land formerly in possession of James Taylor the Elder and James Taylor the Younger who by deed conveyed the said 1800 acres to the executors of Daniel McCarty, Esqr., deceased, in trust for the use of Sarah McCarty, now also deceased, having first intermarried with Thomas Beale by whom she had issue a son who dyed an infant under the age of twenty-one years, after whose death the said land vested in Dennis McCarty a brother and surviving heir of the said Sarah.
