      BRISCOE., Brig.-Gen. John Hanson, died Wed., the 7th, at his dwelling place near Chaptico, St. M. County, in his 44th year, He leaves a widow and several small children, (Sept, 15, 1796)

Maryland, and died September 26, 1796. He married Elizabeth Attaway Bond, daughter of Maj. Thomas Bond and Cecelia Brown.

      Rachel Anne Briscoe was the daughter of Philip Briscoe and Maria Thompson.
      Philip Briscoe was b. 11/9/1786 at "Laureetum", Chaptico, St. Mary's Co. and was the son of Dr. John Hanson Briscoe and Mary Elizabeth Attaway Bond. He died 9/26/1842 and is buried at Christ Epis., Chaptico. Maria Thompson was b. 12/8/1796 in St. Mary's Co. and was the daughter of James Thompson and Anne "Nancy" King. She died 2/14/1863 and is also buried at Christ Epis., Chaptico.

      Philip Briscoe was a lawyer and was the Principal of Charlotte Hall Military Academy from where he had graduated in 1805. He then entered as a student of law in the office of Francis Scott Key (THE Francis Scott Key) in Georgetown and was admitted to the bar as an attorney in Upper Marlboro. After a few years, he decided to teach instead and was named Principal at Charlotte Hall Military
      Academy where he served 9 years.
      After a disagreement with the trustees of the school, he retired to his own farm where he established and conducted a school of his own. In 1837 he was recalled as Principal at Charlotte Hall but in 1840, after suffering a stroke, he again retired to his farm where he died in the fall of 1842. (Charlotte Hall School, 1774-1976, by Dr. J. Roy Guyther). Children of Philip Briscoe and Maria Thompson were:

      1. Lucretia Leeds Briscoe, b. 11/6/1818 and died 3/11/1841, St. Mary's Co.
      She married Henry James Carroll 4/27/1840. Fresco states "Henry James Carroll of Susquehanna who paid the Pope of Rome $1,000 dispensation for the privilege of marrying at lovely old Kingston on the Patuxent, Lucretia Leeds Briscoe". Lucretia died with the birth of her son, Michael Carroll 3/11/1841 and is buried at St. Andrew's Episcopal".

      2. Professor William T. Briscoe, b. 1/20/1821 and died 6/15/1897; buried at All Faith Epis. He married Sarah A.___bef 1850. In 1880 he was Principal of Charlotte Hall Military Academy but was listed in the previous census records from 1850 upward as a teacher and was living in Charlotte Hall--one plus one, etc.

      3. Philip Briscoe, b. 1824; living in 1850.
