KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I LARKIN CHEW the Elder of Saint George Parish in Spotsylvania County for divers good causes and considerations me moving but more especially for the fatherly love I bare my Son, JOHN CHEW, and for his better preferment in the world and for the sum of five pounds sterling money of Great Brittain the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have and by these presents do give bargaine and sell unto my Son, JOHN CHEW, his heirs all that tract of land whereon said JOHN CHEW now lives situate in Saint George Parish in Spotsylvania County on the South side a larger Bever Dam Marsh being part of two Pattents granted to me said LARKIN CHEW the Elder bareing dates some time before the date of these presents and bounded; Beginning at a red Oak corner to RICHARD BUCKNER standing on the South side a Bever Dam Marsh, runing thence South five degrees West one hundred poles into low sunken ground, thence North seventy two degrees West two hundred poles to a Stake by a small Branch, thence North fifty three degrees West two hundred and sixty poles to a Stake in sight of a Road, thence North fifty six degrees East to three small white Oaks standing on a levell corner to JOHN LEWIS, thence along LEWIS's line North sixty five degrees East one hundred and fourty poles to a small Gum in low sunken ground by the Bever Dam Marsh, thence along the Bever Dam Marsh and sunken ground the severall courses thereof to the place it first began containing three hundred thirty five acres according to the exprest bounds thereof and the yearly profitts thereof; To have and to hold the three hundred thirty five acres of land and premises with appertances unto JOHN CHEW his heirs and LARKIN CHEW the Elder and his heirs against all persons will warrant and for ever defend by these presents; AND KNOW YEE by these presents that I LARKIN CHEW the Elder in consideration of the Fatherly love and affection and for the better preferment in the world and for the some of three pounds sterling money of Great Brittain to me in hand paid the receipt whereof I do hereby acknowledge have and by these presents do absolutely sell unto my Son, JOHN CHEW, and unto his heirs six Negro slaves commonly called and known by the names of Dimbo, Mott, Siriah, Geney, Sarah and Potter; To have and to hold the six Negro slaves and their increase unto JOHN CHEW and his heirs [and provided JOHN CHEW dye without lawfull heirs of his body that then this Estate to revert to the said LARKIN CHEW and his heirs] and against all persons will warrant and defend by these presents; In Witness whereof I the said LARKIN CHEW have hereunto put my hand and seal the 5th day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twenty eight and in the second year of the Reign of King George the Second

The Buckners of Virginia and the allied families of Strother and Ashby
New York: Published privately for William Dickinson Buckner by the Genealogical Association, 1907, 415pgs.
Owner of 500 acres of land in Rappahannock County on Sept. 22, 1682, it being part of a tract called Golden Vale." Either he, or his son, also named Richard, patented Lands in King and Queen County, viz.: 70 acres to Richard Buckner of Essex, Feb. 1, 1720; and 4500 acres in Drysdale Parish, Oct. 28, 1723. His residence was in Essex County, as a grant dated 1709, gives to him an island containing 20 acres on the north side of the Rappahannock River in Richmond County, lying near the plantation where said Buckner resides, about two miles below Taliaferro's Mount. On Aug. 17, 1715, he patented 179 acres in St. Mary's Parish, Essex, "adjoining the two tracts belonging to said Buckner of 1000 and 300 acres."
Essex County was formed from old Rappahannock in 1692, and Richard Buckner was clerk of the new County of Essex in 1703 and again in 1712. Whether he was Clerk continuously during that period is not definitely known, as the records of the county are incomplete, but the recorded dates of his appointment are still on file. He was also Clerk of the House of Burgesses in 1714.
Of the four sons of John Buckner, Richard stands out prominently, from the fact, that his descendants were more conspicuous in the affairs of the colony and afterwards of the republic.
Richard Buckner is said to have married Elizabeth Cooke of Gloucester County, but there is no documentary evidence to prove this assertion. It is believed that Richard's daughter, Elizabeth Buckner, also married a Cooke, viz.: Mordecai Cooke son of Mordecai Cook the immigrant who was Sheriff of Gloucester in 1698,
