      TO ALL CHRISTIAN PEOPLE to whom these presents shall come wee MATRUM [Mottom] and RUTH WRIGHT of ye County of Rappa send Greeting. Know ye that we said MATROM and RUTH WRIGHT for divers good causes but especially for a fitt and valued Exchange of a certain tract of Twelve hundred acres of land in aforesd County of Rappa obtained and agreed for with Mr. JOHN BARKER [Baker] of County of NEW KENT as by a certaine obligation under his hand and seale bearing date with these presents will appeare have for ourselves our heirs sold and delivered and the severall Patents of the same do acknowledge have assured and will assigne unto sd Mr. JOHN BAKER of sd County all our right in all that our Plantacon and land in GLOCESTER COUNTY called by ye name of WINTER HARBOR but more especially all the land and Plantacons coneyned in a late Survey made by Coll, LAURENCE SMITH, Surveyor of sd County of GLOCESTER, on the Ninth day of November 1687 and the Patent for the same according to the said survey wee do promise ourselves to make over unto MR. JOHN BAKER his heirs and assigns so soone as he or they shall receive the same from ye Secretaries Office & make thenceforth sd Plantacons and lands wee the sd MATRUM and RUTH WRIGHT by warrant and averr wee have a good and lawfull right being vested in us and the heirs of the body of the sd RUTH as by the last Will and Testament of Mr. ROBERT GRIGGS, Father to the sd RUTH WRIGHT, that now is and further wee the sd MATRUM and RUTH WRIGHT for ourselves our heirs are become bound unto JOHN BAKER his heirs or assigns the sum of Five hundred pounds Sterling that he the sd JOHN BAKER his heirs shall hold all the premises without hindrance of us sd MATRUM and RUTH RIGHT our heirs whereof we hereunto sett our hands and seales this 4th day of December One thousand Six hundred Eighty and nine in the first yeare of the Reigne of our Sovereigne Lord and Lady William and Mary &c.

      THIS INDENTURE made ye 12th day of November in ye year One thousand six hundred ninety and four and in ye sixth year of ye Reigne of our Soveraigne Lord & Lady, King William and Queen Mary &c., Between Mr. JOHN BAKER of Kingstone Parish in GLOCESTER County of ye one pte: and ANTHONY SAMUELL of ye Pish & County aforesd., Planter, Witnesseth that ye sd JOHN BAKER for ye sum of Five thousand five hundred pounds of good sweet scented tobacco & casque to him paid hath sold unto ye sd ANTHONY SAMUELL his heirs & assignes for ever Three hundred acres of land being part of ye tract of land commonly called BUTTONS RANGE containeing 3650 acres granted to Mr. THOMAS BUTTON deced by Patent July ye 19th: 1666, which sd tract was bequeathed by ye sd BUTTON to his Brother, ROBERT BUTTON, by a Will dated March ye first 1669, & since by ye sd heir conveyed unto ye abovesd. JOHN BAKER as by an Order of Governour &Council! to him granted at JAMES CITY October ye 27th: 1688 may appear, which said Three hundred acres of land is bounded Beginning at two Hickoryes in ye Maine Branch of ASAGES SWAMP, thence running along ye line of WRIGHT South Westerly to a Hickory on a hill side near ye maine run, thence NW between three red (lakes & a Hickory, thence North E. to a red Oake, thence NE. to a red Oake & a Chesnut being a corner tree to ye lands of Coll. CATLETT, thence along ye sd CATLETTs line several! courses to a red Oake corner tree to WM. WILLIAMS, thence along ye sd WILLIAMS line South to ye first menconed two Hickorys which sd Three hundred acres of land aforesd. with all ye rights together with all houses, orchards, woods & comodities to ye same belonging granted unto ye sd ANTHONY SAMUELL by the sd Mr. JOHN BAKER are being in ye Parish of Sittingbourne in County of Essex on ye South side of Rappa: River; To have and to hold with every of the rights to ye sd ANTHONY SAMUELL his heirs and ye sd JOHN BAKER the sd Land to his proper use against him ye sd JNO. BAKER and all other persons whatsoever claimeing under him will fully & absolutely warrant for ever ye sd ANTHONY SAMUELL shall for ever for himselfe his heirs quietly possess & enjoye ye sd land without any let of ye sd BAKER or any other persons (he ye sd ANTHONY SAMUELL his heirs for ever hereafter paying ye yearly Quit Rents only excepted) and further ye sd JNO.       The Condicon of this obligacon is if ye above named ANTHONY SAMUELL his heirs may for evermore henceforth peaceably & quietly hold and enjoy a certaine Three hundred acres being part of a greater tract granted by Patent to Mr. THOMAS BUTTON deced, knowne by ye name of BUTTONS RANGE, scituate on the South side of Rappahanock River in Essex County & every pte: menconed to be sold by JNO: BAKER to ANTHO: SAMUELL by a certaine Indenture of Bargaine & sale and ye above named ANTHONY SAMUELL sufficiently saved from all manner of titles & disturbances wt:soever suffered to be done by ye sd JNO: BAKER and further if ye sd JNO: BAKER and ELIZABETH his Wife doe truely performe all condicons which ought to be observed in ye above specified Indenture, then this obligacon to be void, otherwise to remaine in full force

      Will of Thomas Button, (who married by 18 March, 1662, the widow of John Gillett.) Will dated 1 March, 1669, names wife Jane as executrix.
      To brother, Robert Button, he devised the greater part of "Button's Range," in Rappahannock County.
      To Thomas Pettus he bequeathed 100 acres of land in Rappahannock County.
      To godson Henry Creighton, son of Henry Creighton, Sr., he bequeathed 100 acres, part of "Button's Range." Orders &c., 1692, pages 97, 347; Deeds No. 8, page 215. He died prior to 9 August, 1670. Jane, the widow of Thomas Button, married before 24 January, 1671, Watts. Deeds No. 4, 1668-1672, page 526. Shortly after his death, true to the tradition of Virginia widows, we find that in 1674 Mrs. Jane Watts had been wed to her fourth husband, Thomas Gordon.
