      In 1756, Jeremiah purchased the nucleus of what became Morton Hall. He purchased 283 acres from William Connico. He died a year later, a casualty of the French and Indian War (local tradition states that he was killed on nerby Clark's Mountain while trying to arrest a deserter). Jeremiah's son William at the time of his fathers death inherited the land. On 26 May 1757, the inventory and apprasial of the estate of Capt. Jeremiah Morton was presented at the Orange County Court. Ref: Will Book 2, Page 250-252. It was sworn before Captain Thomas Jameson. It included 18 negroes valued at 657 lbs which were a portion of the total appraised value of the esate which was 834 lbs. 9 shillings and 3 pence.

      Article of Agreement 11 Oct 1744 between MARGARET MORTON, widow and relict of GEORGE MORTON, late of the county of Orange, dec'd, and JEREMIAH MORTON, Brother and next heir of the said George, witnesseth .. said Margaret for consideration doth give up and relinquish sole right of administration of the said George Morton's estate in the same manner as though she never had intermarried with the said George .. In consideration .. Jeremiah Morton covenant to give her £70 .. payable on the 10th June next come, twelve months, and likewise to allow her to keep in her hands all the money which was her own proper fortune at the time of her marriage aforesaid . .
