      25 Aug. 1743. Butler Spotswood, Elliott Benger and Robert Rose, Clerk, executors of Alexander Spotswood late of Orange County, Esq., to John Thompson, Clerk. Alexander Spotswood by his last will and testament bearing date 19 April 1740 did give during the minority of his sons John Spotswood or Robert Spotswood power unto Butler Spotswood, Elliott Benger and Robert Rose as exeuctors to lease any of his lands for such term or year or for life or lives as he had leased lands in the Spotsylvania Tract.
      Lease of 200 acres in St. Mark's Parish on the north side of the River Rapidanne being part of 40,000 acres granted to Alexander Spotswood and called the Spotsylvania Tract. For the lives of John Spotswood and Robert Spotswood. Yearly rent, 1000 pounds of tobacco at come convenient landing on Rappahannock River in Spotsylvania County, to commence 25 Dec. 1748. John Thompson shall plant 300 fruit trees, one-third to be apple trees, and the same inclose with a fence and keep buildings and fences in repair.

      Whereas by lease and release dated 5 and 6 March 1724, settlement made upon marriage of Alexander Spotswood with the sd Butler Spotswood, and made between the Honble Alexander Spotswood, late his Majesty's Lieutenant Governor of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia in North America, but then in the Parish of St. Martin's in the Fields, in the County of Middlesex, Esqr., of the first part. Richard Brayne of the Parish of St. Margaret's, Westminister, Esqr. and Robert Cary of the City of London, Merchant, of the second part. Butler Brayne, fourth and youngest daughter of the sd Richard Brayne and Anne, his wife, of the third part.
      The sd release mentioning that whereas the sd marriage by the Grace of God shortly to be had and solemnized between Alexander Spotswood and Butler Brayne .. for charging of the lands and heriditaments .. in consideration of .. intended marriage, and also of the sum of ten shillings of lawfull money of Great Britain by Richard Brayne and Robert Cary to him .. Alexander Spotswood, paid before the sealing and delivery of the release, and divers other good causes .. Alexander Spotswood especially moveing, he .. did grant unto Richard Brayne and Robt. Cary .. land containing 15,000 acres, formerly in counties of Essex and King and Queen, but now in county of Spotsylvania, and in Dominion of Virginia in North America .. bounded as in sd deed mentioned .. together with all houses .. tract of land commonly called the Iron Mine Land .. all profits .. To have and to hold said Iron Mine Land to be released in .. beneficial manner .. as intended by his then Majesty's Letters of Patent dated 20 Feb 1719 to Robert Beverley and Thomas Jones .. unto Richard Brayne and Robert Cary .. forever nevertheless .. with payment to Butler Brayne in case intended marriage takes effect .. Butler Brayne survives Alexander Spotswood. her intended husband, and during her natural life full recompense and satisfaction of all dower rights in these lands. Yearly sun of five hundred pounds of British money from out of the said premises, at most usual feasts of the year .. (that is to say) The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Feast of St. John the Baptist, the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel and the Birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by even and equal portions .. the first payment therein to begin first of the Feast next ensueing the Decease of Alexander Spotswood and all such payments to be .. enjoyed .. free of all and any taxes. If any amount of Five Hundred pounds be unpaid thirty days after, Butler Brayne .. might have Ten pounds for every 20 days wherein be behind and unpaid, and afterwards to be forfeited and lost. From time to time the annuity ought to be paid to hands of John Thompson and Butler, his wife.
      Whereas Alexander Spotswood, on the 7th day of July 1740, departed this life, and whereas afterwards a marriage was intended to be solemnized by John Thompson and Butler Spotswood, she .. intending to convey .. a moiety or one half of annuity of yearly sum of Five Hundred pounds to her children begotten her by Alexander Spotswood, sign in writeing 8 Nov 1742, witnessed by John Thompson, her intended husband, declaring that out of very great love .. son, John Spotswood .. to have one half of her Fortune ... Two Hundred Fifty pounds Sterling a year, from that day, 8 Nov 1742, but with the reserve that Fifty pounds of it be paid yearly on Negroes for her son, Robert Spotswood .. that the Negroes purchased be imployed in her son, John Spotswood's, estate, in order to enable him to bring up, educate and maintain her son, Robert Spotswood, in a Hansome Manner. If son, Robert, lives to be 18 years, then such slaves remaining on estate purchased in this manner to be delivered unto him with their increase.
      Whereas afterwards on the 9th Nov 1742, the marriage between John Thompson and Butler Spotswood did take effect and was solemnized .. Now this Indenture .. for perfect conveying the moiety of 1/2 of the aforesaid .. of the yearly sum of five hundred pounds Sterling .. in such manner as mentioned for natural love .. Butler Thompson unto her children; John Spotswood, Robert Spotswood, Anna Catharina Spotswood, Dorathea Spotswood, for sum of Ten shillings, by Robert Rose and Elliott Benger to John Thompson and Butler, his wife, for divers reasons, they especially moveing .. grant unto Robt. Rose and Elliott Benger, a moiety or amount of yearly Rents of five hundred pounds for 15,000 acres of Iron Mine Lands. (Indenture mentioned from 9 Nov 1742.) To have and to hold .. charge of Five Hundred pounds .. for life to Butler Thompson to interest .. as the sd John Thompson and Butler, his wife, receive such annuities .. that Robert Rose and Elliott Benger and the survivor of them .. one half of said annuity .. one fifth of the said moiety for John Spotswood until Robert Spotswood comes to the age of 18 years .. assign 1/5 .. to Anna Catharina Spotswood and Dorathea Spotswood .. and lastly agreed by all parties .. is that Robert Rose and Elliott Benger (Trustees named) .. their survivors shall sustain management thereof touching or concerning the within .. have interchangeably signed their names.

      27 Dec. 1751. John Spotswood of Spotsylvania County, Esqr., to John Thompson of St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper County, Clerk. By indenture 25 Aug. 1743 Butler Spotswood, Elliott Benger and Robert Rose, Clerk, executors of Alexander Spotswood, Esqr., in behalf of John Spotswood, then an infant under the age of twenty one years, did grant unto John Thompson 200 acres on the north side of the River Rappadane, being part of 40,000 acres granted by pattent to Alexander Spotswood and called the Spotsylvania Tract and by indenture 22 May 1745 the executors did grant one other tract of 200 acres being part of he tract of 40,000 acres to John Thompson, to hold the two tracts for the lives of John Spotswood and Robert Spotswood, yielding the yearly rent of 1000 pounds of tobacco, and John Thompson having intermarried with Butler, the widow and relict of Alexander Spotswood, who was entitled to a jointure of £500 sterling per annum as upon a deed of settlement upon the marriage of Alexander Spotswood with Butler may appear, and by an indenture quinque partite 23 Feb. 1746 between the Reverend John Thompson of Orange County and Butler his wife, late widow and relict of the Honourable Alexander Spotswood, the Reverend Robert Rose of Essex County [and] Elliott Benger of Spotsylvania County, Esqr., John Spotswood of Orange County, eldest son and heir and devisee of Alexander Spotswood, Robert Spotswood of Orange County, second son of Alexander, and Anna Catharina Spotswood and Dorothea Spotswood, daughters of Alexander, John Thompson and Butler his wife did make over to Robert Rose and Elliott Benger a half of the annuity of £500 sterling upon the trusts and confidence and purposes therein mentioned much to the benefitt and advantage of John Spotswood, and by a bond from John Spotswood and John Thompson in the penalty of £2000 John Spotswood in consideration of a deed of gift of half his mother's jointure made to Robert Rose and Elliott Benger, did oblige himself to lease 400 acres to John Thompson for lives for the yearly rent of an ear of Indian corn, which land is since surveyed and laif off by agreement in two tracts in some measure differing from the limits and bounds of the first recited two tracts, and it being the intent of the parties that the indentures of lease dated 25 Aug. 1743 and 22 May 1745 shall be null and void, John Spotswood for John Thompson's surrendering up and vacating the two leases and giving up all his title to one moiety of the annuity of £500, grants: 230 acres ... on the Schoolhouse path near Robert Johnstones fence ... on the south side of Mr. Lightfoot's road ... on a branch side near John Thompson's fence ... east side of the Courthouse Road and on the south side of a branch ...       This Indenture made 19th November 1771 between Reverend JOHN THOMPSON of the Parish of St. Marks in County of Culpeper Clerk of one part and WILLIAM THOMPSON Gent. Son of the said John Thompson of other part. Witnesseth that John Thompson in consideration of natural love to his son and sum of Five shillings hath granted unto William Thompson the following Tracts of land in said County of Culpeper that is to say one Tract purchased by John Thompson of one SAMUEL FARGESON and bounded as by the Deed from Fargeson to Thompson of record in Court of Culpeper County and also one other Tract purchased by John Thompson of COLEMAN BROWN containing 400 acres and bounded as in Deeds mentioned also one other Tract, containing 94 acres taken up by Patent by John Thompson adjoining the GLEBE LAND of the Parish of St. Marks and Bounded as in said Patent mentioned and by RICHARD YOUNGs Survey also another Tract of land lying on the Hazel River purchased of one JOHN ASTLY containing 238 acres bounded as in Deed from said Astly is mentioned, also one other Tract adjoining the last mentioned Tract granted to John Thompson by Patent from the LORD FAIRFAX Proprietor of the Northern Neck bearing date 17 August 1748 and containing 824 acres also all his the said John Thompson's Right to the Remainder in two several Plantations which he now holds for life under the late JOHN SPOTSWOOD's Esqr. and containing 393 acres together with all houses ..

      George the Third .. to JAMES SLAUGHTER, JOHN STROTHER and WILLIAM BALL Gent. of Culpeper County Whereas John Thompson and Elizabeth his Wife have conveyed unto William Thompson the fee Simple Estate of Five tracts of land and whereas the said Elizabeth cannot conveniently travel to our county court to make acknowledgment We do give unto you power to receive the acknowledgment which the said Elizabeth shall be willing to make and when you have received the acknowledgment certifie us in our said Court .. Witness ROGER DIXON Clerk of our said Court at the Court House of said County the 20th November in 12th year of our Reign.
      In Obedience to within Commission We have this day privily examined Mrs. Elizabeth Thompson and find that she has of her free will and accord given up her right of Dower .. five tracts of land .. this 20th November 1771.

      Know all men .. that I JOHN THOMPSON of Parish of St. Marks County of Culpeper Clerk in consideration of natural love I bear unto my son WILLIAM THOMPSON and in consideration of Five shillings have granted the following Slaves (named) together with the future increase of the said women slaves (named) and also all the Stock of what nature or kind whatsoever now being upon two Plantations or leased land belonging to John Thompson above Mount Poney to hold .. this 20th November 1771.

      THIS INDENTURE made this 27th day of July in year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred & Eighty four Between ANTHONY GARNETT, ROBERT GREEN, WILLIAM BALL, JAMES SLAUGHTER, JAMES PENDLETON, SAMUEL CLAYTON & CADWALLADER SLAUGHTER, Gent. late Vestry Men of Parish of St. Marks in County of Culpeper of one part and WILLIAM BRADLEY of said County of other part WHEREAS by an Act of Assembly passed in the year 1769 intitled "an Act to empower the Vestry of St. Marks Parish in County of Culpeper to sell the GLEBE of said Parish and to lay out the money in purchasing a more convenient GLEBE," it is Enacted that the said GLEBE LAND with the appurtenances be vested in the present Vestry of said Parish for the time being in Trust, Nevertheless that the said Vestry or the greater part of them all shall by Deed of Bargain & Sale sell and Convey the said GLEBE with the appurtenances for the best price that can be got for the same to any person who shall be willing to purchase the same, to hold to such purchaser their heirs and Whereas at a Vestry held for said Parish the 4th day of June 1770 when the above Vestrymen were present with JOHN THOMPSON Rector & WILLIAM GREEN, BENJAMIN ROBERTS, GOODRICH LIGHTFOOT and WILLIAM WILLIAMS Gent. Vestrymen who are since dead the said GLEBE and appurtenances were sold to SAMUEL HENING for the sum of One hundred & ninety nine pounds which was the best price that could be had for the same, and SAMUEL HENING afterwards sold his title to the same to WILLIAM THOMPSON who has since sold the same to WILLIAM BRADLEY, party hereto, Nevertheless a Conveyance thereof from the said Vestry nor any of them to an person has never been made NOW THIS INDENTURE WITNESSETH that the said (the Vestrymen named at the beginning of this entry) wheare the only Survivors of the then Vestry by virtue of the power to them given by said recited Act of Assembly and for sum of One hundred & ninety pounds current money to them in hand paid for the purposes aforesaid by these presents do bargain & sell unto WILLIAM BRADLEY his heirs all that tract of land sold by JOHN ASHLY to the Churchwardens of said Parish lying in the Great Fork of RAPPHANNOCK RIVER and bounded Begining at three white Oaks Corner to WILLIAM SMITH in the dividing line Between JOHN QUARLES & JOHN ASHLY, thence with the Dividing Line North forty degrees East One hundred & ninety four poles to a red and white Oak and Pine tree in a line of COLO. CARTERs, thence with CARTERs line North forty five degrees West one hundred and ten poles to a Gum, another corner of CARTERs, thence South seventy five degrees West One hundred & thirty poles to two white Oaks and a red Oak in said CARTERs line, thence South twenty five degrees West One hundred and fifty poles to three white Oaks in a line of a Patent granted to the aforesaid QUARLES & ASHLEY, thence South sixty nine degrees East one hundred and fifty poles to the begining, containing two hundred and fifteen acres, Together with all appurtenances thereunto To have and to hold the said land and premises unto WILLIAM BRADLEY his heirs In Witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands & Seals the day and year mentioned in this writing
