Ezekiel Skinner's will names his wife as Mary Allender, which has been interpreted as an alternate spelling for Mary Eleanor.

It's been speculated that her maiden name was Gray on FamilySearch and on Ancestry because Gray was carried down as a middle name, as mentioned in Ezekiel's will, specifically Mary E Gray Skinner (E likely for Eleanor) and Asa W Gray Skinner. However, it seems more likely that she was an Allen. Asa's middle initial of W stood for William, quite possibly for his grandfather William Allen. His and Mary E's middle name of Gray could have been for his g-grandfather John Gray. We speculate that Ezekiel and Mary Eleanor's 1st child, John A Skinner's middle name
was Allen since Allen was a middle name carried down the Skinner line (Asa Allen and James Allen) but so far, we have no proof to confirm our suspicion. The only hint of Gray being carried further down the line is Samuel G Skinner, Ezekiel and Mary Eleanor's grandson through their son Ezekiel, but the G could stand for something other than Gray, too.

Ezekiel and Mary Eleanor had a daughter named Precious, possibly named after her sister Preshe or Precius as written in William Allen's will.

William Allen's will doesn't give Mary Eleanor's married name but his will was written in 1781 when she was unmarried. She was likely 15-19 years old at the time based on the age brackets checked for Ezekiel's wife on the 1810 and 1820 censuses and her likely age when James A
      Skinner was born.

Lastly proximity for the Allens and Skinners lines up. They lived in Durham Parish, Charles County, as did other lines that intermarried, namely Maddox, Gray, Speake, Smallwood, Posey, Adams, Brawner, and Manning.
