      1755 - John Milstead is in the 1755 Tax List of Durham Lower Part, Charles Co., Md. He is not a head of household but is living with his sister Catherine Price and she is taxed for 5 slaves as well as John. Catherine herself is not taxable.

      Mar. 1756 - John Milstead and Matthew Milstead are on a petition of Charles Co. inhabitants to the Governor and Maryland Assembly requesting relief from debts; drought has caused poor tobacco crop; suggest a bond to their creditors with security and interest till they can make a good crop. Petition read and rejected.

      Mar. and Nov. 1763 - The case, Thomas Contee & Co. vs. James Livers of Charles Co., planter, is a suit on a note dated Mar. 30, 1763 that was witnessed by John Milstead (makes his mark.)

      Mar. 1767 - John Milstead requested and was granted a land commission for his land "Widow Righted," lying near Ward's Run in June 1766. The Commission was held Nov. 1766. There are no Milsteads among the persons who gave depositions or who are mentioned in those depositions. The depositions state that "Widow Righted" was formerly called "Brett's Beginning" which escheated and that it adjoined a tract called "Ashbrook's Rest." The Commission was reported back at the Mar. 1767 Court.

      May and July 1773 - The Charles Co., Md. administration accounts of James Gray show John Milstead and William Hargis Gray as sureties for the administration of Gray's estate by executors Sophiah and Jeremiah Gray.

      Oct. 18, 1777 - Administration was granted on the estate of James Woodward, late of Charles Co., deceased, to Violetta Woodward, his widow.
      Securities: John Milstead and Richard Woodward.
      Bond: 300 Pounds.
      Appraisers: Ignatius Lucket and Thomas Boucher Frankling.
      On Feb. 28, 1778, the inventory was received, amounting to 126/8/9 1/4.

      Oct. 5, 1778 - We, John Milstead and Charity Milstead, of Charles Co., have this day, for the real love and affection we have for our daughter, Violetta Woodward, and our hereafter named 3 grandchildren (viz.) Hendly Woodward, John Covert Woodward, and Robert Woodward, a Negro girl called Catherine, about 6 years old, during the natural life of said Violetta, and at said Violetta's death, with her increase, to be equally divided between our aforesaid 3 grandchildren.       Nov. 1779 - John Milstead, of Charles Co., planter, is pledge and security for Henry Speake and Mary Speake in the case Henry Davis vs. Henry Speake and Mary Speake, his wife, executors of Joseph Calvert [sic; Covert], late of Charles Co., deceased.

      Nov. 1779 - John Milstead and Richard Woodard are sureties for the administration of the Charles Co., Md. estate of James Woodward by Violetta Woodward administratrix. Representatives: the widow and 4 children whose ages are unknown to the office.

      1783 - John Milstead is in the 1783 Tax List of Durham Upper and Lower Hundreds, Charles Co., Md., as follows:

      (1) "Renewment," 275 acres (180 acres of which is cleared), value 171/17/6, situation "Forrest," improvements - 1 dwelling, 1 tobacco house, 1 corn house, kitchen.
      (2) part of "Stoney Hill" [100 acres of it also owned by Richard Woodward], 30 acres (20 acres of which is cleared) value 18/15/0, situation "Forrest," no improvements on the land.
      (3) "Widow Wrighted" [sic; Righted], 50 acres (10 acres of which is cleared), value 25/0/0, original name of land - "Bretts Beginning," situation "Forrest," soil quality poor, no improvements on the land.

      Oct. 1783 - Ann Gow Covert, an orphan 14 years of age the 2nd day of September last is by the Court removed from under the guardianship of Henry Speake, it appearing that the said Speake used the said orphan ill, at the same time the said Ann Gow Covert makes choice of John Milstead as her guardian who, not being present in Court from infirmity of body but accepted thereof by his cosent in writing to the Register of Wills legally attested, the Court thereupon ordered that the estate of the said orphan be delivered into the hands of her guardian, he giving bond and security according to law.

      Oct. 1783 - Jane Covert, an orphan 10 years of age last September is by the Court put under the guardianship of John Milstead who was not present in Court but has since accepted thereof by his consent in writing to the Register of Wills legally attested, whereupon the Court ordered that the estate of the said orphan be delivered into the hands of her guardian, he giving bond and security according to law.

      Oct. 1783 - John Milstead, Sr. (makes his mark) is appointed guardian to Jane Covert and Ann Gow Covert, orphans of Joseph Covert, deceased. John posts guardianship bonds for each girl in the amount of 300 pounds current money, with James Ratliff/Ratcliff and Thomas Coe/Cox his securities.

      Jan. 1786 - John Milstead, of Charles Co., planter, deeds to Zephanh Franklin, of Charles Co., planter, for the good will and affection that he has towards his loving friend, and for 10 Pounds Sterling, all his right to all that part of a tract of land in Charles Co., being part of the "Widow Righted," bounded by a tract of land called "Bretts Beginning," containing and now laid out for about 50 acres.
