      Capt. William DOWNEING. 200 A. Stafford County, upon Potomac Cr. Run. Part of tract of 6,000 acs. patented by Thomas WILKINTON [sic], who gave same to William NEWMAN for seating the whole devident. NEWMAN made choice of 200 A., half of which he sold to John BLAGRAVE & the other to John KEETH, who bought BLAGRAVE'S part. At his death, sd. KEETH divided same equally bet. his son & dau. & the son dying bef he attained age, the land desc. to his daughter, who intermarried with John MARTIN, & afterwards died in child bed, the child also dying. MARTIN sold the land to sd. DOWNING. Cert. of Theodorick BLAND, Surveyor, re above, dated 16 Jan 1691/2. Herein the name of KEETH is sp. KEETCH. No mention of given names of his son and dau.

      Pp.32--32a TO ALL XIAN PEOPLE to whom these presents shall come I JOHN PEAK sendeth greeting. Know Yee yt I the sd JOHN PEAKE for a valuable consideration already in hand have sold unto CAPT. WM . DOWNEING him his heires or assignes all my Land lyinge on ye South syde of POTTOMACK RUNN at the head of POTTOMACK CREKE in POTTOMACK RIVER in Stafford County in Virga, and bounded & beginninge at the runn on the South syde against a marked black make with standeth on ye North syde of the Rum joyneing upon the land of JNO. KEETCH and soe runing according unto the Survey of Capt. JNO. ALEXANDER which survey doth begin as aforesd which land is the Reversion of foureteene hundred and fifty acres of land lyinge on the South syde of POTTOMACK CREEK (that is to say) the Reversion of vt land lyeth on ye South side of POTTOMACK CREEKE as aforesaid which Pattent will make out ye bounds of the sd Reversion of Land that lyeth as aforesd and I doe assume to deliver the Pattent to WM. DOWNING the first opportunity I have and the sd land being the moytie of 1450 acres of land sold to me by THOMAS WILLSON & is part of 6000 acres of land granted unto him by Patent and the sd WM. DOWNING hee his heires or assignes to have the sd land with all Rights for Ever and I doe Warrt_ ye said land free & clear and I doe assume to keepe the sd WM. DOWNEING his heires harmless from any thirds beinge demanded by my Wife. In Witness whereof I have sett my hand & Seale this 7 day February in the yeare 1686/7

Indenture 14th September 1698 between WILLIAM DOWNING in county Stafford Planter of one part and JOHN TRAMMILL of parish Cople in county Westmoreland Planter Witnesseth for sum four thousand five hundred pounds good sound Merchantable Tobo. & cask .. sold parcel of land containing by estimation 969 acres lying on main run of Potomack Creek in county Stafford bounded .. beginning at a Spanish oak standing on brink of Potomack Creek at the upper end of the low grounds .. along the line of a tract of land of Mr. THEODER1CK BLAND to Potomack Run .. the said land was surveyed for Mr. RICHARD PASKER Janry. 4th.1692 and by him sold to JOHN PIKE and by him sold to THOMAS WALLIS who pattented the same and conveyed it to William Downing ..

      STAFFORD COUNTY VA DEED & WILL BOOK 1699 - 1709; THE ANTIENT PRESS Pp. 287-291 Indenture made third day September 1705 between Capt. EDWD. MOUNTJOY &ELIZABETH his wife of county Stafford in Virga. of the one part & THOMAS JAMES of said county Witnesseth that for sum 16,000 pounds of Tobo. & cask .. sold the sundry lands & messuages hereinafter mentioned that is to say one certain parcel of land conta. 200 acres being in ye county Stafford Upon South side of Potomac Run the land beginning at a marked Beech Tree standing by the run & running from thence Southerly into the woods 320 poles Easterly 90=po: Northerly 320 poles to a marked white oak upon the said run which land is the westmost part of 1450 acres of land bought formerly by WILLIAM DOWNING of the said county of one JOHN PEAK of the same county which 200 acres of land was by William Downing sold unto one HENRY THOMPSON of said county as appears by a deed of sale bearing date 9th Novr. 1687 after which Henry Thompson sold the 200 acres unto Edward Mountjoy as appears by his assignment bearing date 5th February 1689 as also one other parcel of land containing 130 acres being part of 157 acres of land sold by William Downing unto Edward Mountjoy which land is being in county Stafford between the upper line of John Peaks pattent and the 200 acres above mentioned beginning at a Maple lying the N=side of Potomeck main run & running thence W=67 po: to a small gum saplin on the S-side of the main run being a corner tree of John Peaks Pattent & the uppermost corner on the Run thence along the upper side of Jno. Peaks Pattent S=156 poles to a white oak in John Peaks line near a meadow thence E=56 poles to ye above sd 200 acres thence along the upper side line of the 200 acres N=320 poles to the upper corner tree of the 200 acres thence along the corner end of the 200 acres next Potomack Run E till it comes to the main run thence up along the main run according to its several meanders to the first beginning as appears by William Downings deed of sale bearing date 13th day February 1694 both which parcels of land together amounting and containing 330 acres ..

      At a Court held 12th September 1705 Edward Mountjoy Gent. in person acknowledged this sale of land .. Henry Connyers by power of Atty from Eliza. Mountjoy relinquished her right of dower to same which together with this Deed is ordered to be recorded & is recorded.
      Be it known .. that I Eliza. Mountjoy wife of Capt. Edward Mountjoy of Stafford County have authorized in my place my trusty & well beloved friend Henry Connyer of ye game county my true certain & lawful attorney .. to make acknowledgment of all my right title & interest of 330 acres of land sold by my Husband unto Thomas James .. 10th Sept. 1705.

      To all Christian People .. Know ye that I WILLIAM DOWNING for sum 200 pounds of Tobo to me in hand paid by PIERCE KNOWLAND of same county .. have sold one parcel of land lying upon Potomack Creek run in said county and bounded .. beginning at a great red oak on the North side the run and running thence out into the woods N=320 poles thence E=50 poles thence 5=640 poles co the main run of Potomack Creek & conta. by Estimation 100 acres of land the said land being part of 200 acres granted Wm. Downing the 12th day July 1692 recourse being had to said pattent will more at large appear ..10th day May 1707.
