      IN THE NAME OF GOD, Amen. I THOMAS GATEWOOD of the County of Essex and the Parish of Southfarnham being sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to Almighty God for the same, calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say, First and principally I recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it hoping to receive perfect remission and forgiveness of my sins by the merritts of my blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and a Joyfull Resurrection with the Just at the last day; And my body to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named; And as touching such temporal Estate as it hath pleased God to bestow upon me, I give and bequeath the same as follows, Vizt.,
      Imprimis I give and bequeath to my Son, THOMAS GATEWOOD, all my Land to him and the male heirs of his body for ever and in case my said Son should die without any such male heir, then the said Land to go to the next male heir;
      Item. To my said Son, THOMAS, I give all my Troopers Armes & four ewes;
      Item. My Will and desire is that my Son, JOSEPH GATEWOOD, may be put to school this ensuing year and to be kept at school during the whole year, also I leave him to be at age at the time that he attains to Eighteen years of age;
      Item. I Lend to my loving Wife the third part of all my Estate during her natural life and at her death to return to the six youngest Children;
      Item, I give to my two Daughters, ELIZABETH HAILE and AMY SAINT JOHN, to each Ten pounds Currt. money;
      Item. All the rest residue and remainder of my Estate of what nature and kind whatsoever I give and bequeath to my six youngest Children to wit: AMBROSE, ROBERT, JOHN, SARAH, RACHAEL and JOSEPH; to them and their heirs forever;
      Lastly, I constitute and appoint my Son, AMBROSE GATEWOOD, my whole and sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament revoking all former Wills by me heretofore made and appoint this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form aforesaid;
      In Testimony whereof I have set my hand and seal this 3d day of December one thousand seven hundred and forty eight

      At. a Court held for Essex County at Tappahannock on the 21st day of March Anno Dom 1748 This Last Will and Testament of THOMAS GATEWOOD deceased being presented in Court by AMBROSE GATEWOOD, the Executor therein named, who made Oath thereto as the Law directs, And the same being also duly proved by the oaths of all the witnesses thereto is admitted to record; And on the motion of the said Executor and his performing all such things as the.Law in such cases require, a Certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate thereof in due form

      Unto my son Henry, Gatewood 75 acres beginning at a corner tree standing against Simon Copner's house who is now deceased and running toward Joseph Billender's land. Also one six year old. stear and one cow...and calf
      Unto my daughter Anne Burnett 4000 pounds of tobacco and one bay mare with a blase in her face branded on the near buttock with this brand 3.
      All the rest of my worldly estate, to be equally divided between my three' younger children and. thy beloved wife Anne Gatewood, namely between my beloved wife and Sarah Gatewood and William Gatewood and Francis Gatewood.

      THIS INDENTURE made the XXIId and XXIIId day of July 1734 Between JOHN HUNT of the County of Essex of one part and THOS. GATEWOOD of the same County Witnesseth that the sd John Hunt for sum of Fiveteen pounds Current money of Virga. hath granted released and confirmed unto the sd Thomas Gatewood & unto his heirs a certain tract of land in the County of Essex & next and adjoyning to a tract of Two hundred acres of land belonging to & in the possession of the sd Thomas Gatewood & begining at a stake by a Corner red and white oak the end of the third course of the sd Tract and running West across a branch to a Stake near COMPTONs Cornfield fence standing in a Third Course of a Patient for Five thousand One hundred acres of land granted to one HENRY AWBRY thence East along Awbry's line to a Corner white oak of the sd Thomas Gatewoods & by his line of marked trees to the begining place containing Forty eight acres and one half the sd Tract or parcel of land being part of the remainder of the aforesd Patent granted to the aforesd Henry Awbry on the 4th October MDCLXXV and on the 19th day of March MDCLXXVII another Patient for the sd Land was granted unto Henry Awbry by HERBERT JEFFRIES Esqr. which land lately was in the occupation of THOMAS TODD of the Province of MARYLAND gent. and decended and came to him as heir at Law to his Father THOS. TODD late of the sd Province decd as well as by the Last Will & Testament of his sd Father and by the sd Thos. Todd the sd land was conveyed by Deeds of Lease and Release unto the sd John Hunt the Release dated the 18th day of June last past and acknowledged and ordered to be recorded in the Essex County Court the same day (all which sd premises now are in the actual possession of him the sd Thomas Gatewood by virtue of Indenture of Bargain and Sale and by virtue of the Statute for transferring uses into possession)

      THIS INDENTURE made the 18th and 19th day of August in the year 1734 Between JOSEPH BILLAND NOBLE of the Parish and County of AMELIA of the one part and THOMAS GATEWOOD of the Parish of Southfarnham and County of Essex of other part Witnesseth that sd Joseph Billand Noble for sum Twelve hundred pounds of Tobacco by these presents doth grant unto sd Thomas Gatewood & unto his heirs and assigns forever a Certain parcel of land in the aforesd County of Essex and Parish of Southfarnham being part of a Tract of Two hundred acres of land that formerly belonged to JOSEPH BILLAND containing Seventy Five acres and adjoyning to the land of the sd Thomas Gatewood and bounded beginning at a Corner white oak standing in the line of sd Thomas Gatewood and running thence West along the line of the said Gatewood to a Corner Ring Oak standing on a small hill thence West to a Corner of WILLIAM DICKS to a spanish oak thence South to a Corner Pine of ye sd Thomas Gatewoods thence West along the line of sd Gatewoods to the beginning all which sd premises are now in the actual possession of said Thomas Gatewood by virtue of Indenture of Bargain and Sale and by virtue of the Statute for transferring uses into possession , . .
